"It's a dog!" Layla shouted.

"I had realized!" I replied in the same voice.

I suppose I may have thrown her off by texting her, saying there was a very handsome fella in my apartment and I wanted to introduce them. The dog had shown up on my doorstep this morning—no note, no nothing.

I didn't really know what to do, so I brought him inside. He was a pretty big dog. He had a sleek black coat and dark, watchful eyes. He seemed well-trained and obedient, responding to basic commands with ease.

What a cute patootie!

"Why the hell is there a dog in your house?" Layla stared at me. I crouched down, and the dog pattered over to me. I grinned, playing with his ears.

"Because just look at that face!" I replied in that voice that we all use when talking to cute animals. You know the one I mean.

"Sabrina, you can't take in a random dog just like that! What if he's dangerous?" She took a small step back as the large dog sniffed at her shoe.

"I think I just did. Also, of course, he's not dangerous. He's just a little' muffin. Aren't you? Aren't you a buddy?" I grinned like a child holding an ice cream. The large dog wagged its tail and licked my hand.

"I got here as fast as I could!" Ann's voice made me look up. She had just jogged into the living room, completely out of breath.

"What prompted the 991 text- OH MY GOD, PUPPY!"

"Annie, be careful; he might be rabid or something-" Layla tried to stop her, but she didn't listen. Ann dropped to her knees next to me and began petting the dog with a wide grin on her face.

"Oh, aren't you just the most handsome puppers I've ever seen?" She giggled as the dog placed a couple slobbery kisses on her cheek. I laughed.

"Why do you never listen to me?" Layla groaned. "Do you remember when you saw that snake in the back and you said, and I quote, 'I think it just needs a hug' and you went to the hospital for two days?"

"Yeah, what about it?" I didn't even look up.

"I told you not to pet it. Don't you think you can take anything from the story and apply it to this situation?" She prompted, speaking very slowly. I stopped to think.

"I'm sorry; you know what. You're right." I shighed. A smile began to spread over Layla's face. "He needs a hug too." And with that, I threw my arms around the dog.

"UGH!" Layla groaned in frustration, dropping down onto the couch.

"What kind of dog is he, do you think?" Ann as she booped his nose.

"I'm not sure; I'm thinking maybe a German Shepherd mix," I replied, scratching behind the dog's ears.

"Eh, who cares? He's gorgeus." I said, admiring him. "What should I call him?" I asked after a pause. Ann clapped her hands excitedly.

"How about... Leo?"

"What? No!" Layla sat up, her eyes wide. "You can't keep him!"

"Oh yeah? And how are you going to stop me?" I smirked chalangingly. Layla crossed her arms and gave me a determined look. "Well, for starters, we need to find out if he has an owner or if he's lost," she said firmly. "We can't just assume he's up for grabs."

"Nuh uh. Finders keepers. Losers weepers," I replied defiantly.

"Who would be the loser in the scenario?" A piped up curiously.
