I ran a hand over my face, trying to somehow keep myself awake. This was the third night in a row that I had stayed to work late, analizing data and making strategies. I wasn't always alone like I was today; some of the team members stayed up with me, but it wasn't fair to them, so I usually sent them home.

I looked down at my watch, my eyelids drooping slightly. My vision was becoming blurred with sleep, but I managed to make out the small hands.

1:33

I let out a soft groan, rubbing my sore eyes. I had been staring at this goddamn screen for three hours. I pulled off my headphones and put my head in my hands. I still needed to clear up, drive home, maybe have a shower, and find a good reason why I would want to spend the whole night here instead of with my boyfriend.

Speak of the devil.

My phone chimed, and I picked it up. I felt that familiar, childlike smile spread over my face as I saw his name on the screen. He was my favorite notification.

Ver-stop-pan

Babyyyy

Where are you? 🥺

Me

Why are you still up?

Ver-stop-pan

Waiting for you obviously, you muppet

Me

You promised you wouldn't!

Ver-stop-pan

Oh, come on, you know I'm a liar.

Now come over so I can hug you and kiss you.

Me

I'm almost done. I swear

Just go to sleep, and I'll be there soon, okay?

Ver-stop-pan

You know I can't sleep without you...

I miss you

Me

I miss you too

I wish I was with you instead of here

Ver-stop-pan

Good, because I'm outside

Me

What?!

Really?!

Max!

I swear, if you are joking, I will smother you with a pillow when I get back.

No reply.

My heart began to speed up as I jumped up from my chair, my phone clattering to the ground behind me. I couldn't care less. I hadn't seen Max since yesterday night. It doesn't sound like a long time, but to me, it was an eternity. Plus, I was only with him for a couple of hours before I had to leave him again.

I ran over to the window and fumbled with the blinds, my fingers already shaking excitedly. I finally managed to pull them up and press my forehead against the glass. I scanned the parking lot outside. A couple cars were scattered here and there, but none were his.
