"--I'm just saying, Lily, the only other person who fancies you who you've spoken to more than once is Severus!" Alice ranted.
We were walking at the library at the end of the day, after James interrupted our homework with his shitty pickup lines.
"Yeah, and I'd much rather have him than James!"
I raised my eyebrow. "Yeah, suuure."
"I'm serious!"
"No, Sirius is in your common room."
She shoved me. "I swear you are going native."
"What do you mean, 'native'?"
"You sounded like James's lot! Sirius and that. What do they call themselves? The marooners or whatever?"
"The Marauders?"
"Yeah!"
"Well, yeah, they're my mates. They're nice."
"You're only saying that because they don't prank Hufflepuffs as often as they do Gryffindors!"
"Aww, poor Gwyffy-Wyffindors!" I mocked.
"To be fair, Y/n, the only reason you started talking to them in the first place is 'cos you fancy Remus."
Lily nudged my arm. "Speak of the devil."
I looked up and saw a far too familiar messy mop of brown hair, buried in stacks of parchment and books.
I turned to my friends with an excited grin.
"Yes, fine, you hang out with your boyfriend."
"Thank you! I promise I'll help you later."
I skipped over to his table with a smile.
"Hi, Rem!"
"Wha--?" He raised his head with half-opened eyes. "Oh, hey." He gave a tired, dopey smile.
I giggled. "Hi. Are you okay?"
"Yeah. 'M jus' tired."
"What're you working on?"
"History of Magic."
I snorted. "No wonder you're falling asleep. You want help?"
"Please." He begged with his tired doe eyes.
"Of course. Are you struggling or just tired?"
"Meh."
"Right." I chuckled.
After a few minutes, he was slightly more awake, helping me with my Astronomy homework as I corrected his Potions essay.
I looked up at him and noticed his fluffy brown hair was completely wild.
"You need a hair cut." I stated.
He stared at me with wide eyes, touching his locks self-consciously. "What's wrong with it?"
"Nothing's wrong, per se, but if you leave it like this you're gonna start looking like Sirius and me. You just need a little bit off the sides really." I reached up into his hair, mussing it up and measuring the length. "You could do it yourself, if you had a razor. Or if you used a bit of hair gel, make it a bit more sticky-uppy like Barty."
I glanced at his face to find it bright red as he watched me. His breath hitched as he stammered.
Then I remembered my hands in his hair.
I hadn't thought about putting them there, but now that I was, all I wanted to do was run my fingers through it, fluff it, tug it...
I retracted them. "You wouldn't really need to. You look good no matter what you do."
He smiled weakly. "Yeah, sure."
"I'm not joking. You look great wearing anything."
He shook his head with a laugh. "No, I really don't."
"Yeah, y'really do! What makes you think you don't?"
He shrugged. "I'm not pretty."
I pulled my head back in surprise. "What the hell are you on about, Rem? What exactly do you not like about yourself?"
He looked at his hands, which were now wrapped in the sleeves of his jumper.
"I'm just... not really attractive. My hair's a mess and I'm too tall. I'm way too skinny and I, just... Well..." I pointed at the most prominent scar on his face, one which ran across his nose and just above his right eyebrow.
I placed my hand over his. "Those features don't make you ugly. Not even in the slightest!"
"Then why can't I get a girlfriend?" He raised his voice suddenly. "James is flirting with girls left, right and centre, Sirius has been snogging one of the Gryffindor girls and even Peter's got a girlfriend! So why don't I?"
"Okay, first of all, the only girl James is flirting with is Lily, who he's been hopelessly in love with since they were eleven. Sirius flirts with everyone and has kissed everyone at least once. And the girl who asked Peter out has fancied him since our third years. The only thing they have that you don't is confidence. If you asked anyone in this school out, there is a 100% chance they would say yes."
"Thanks."
I smiled sadly. "You really don't believe me, do you?"
"I'm really struggling on this question." He changed the subject quickly. "About vampires? You're pretty good with vampires aren't you?"
I sighed. "Yeah. I'm the vampire expert. Do you mind helping me with that question afterwards? You're more of a werewolf expert."
He found this quite funny. "I guess I am."
After what could have been 10 minutes or 1 hour, my eyelids begun to drop.
"For fuck's sake, why are the teachers such arseholes?" I groaned, dropping my head on the desk.
He laughed. "You sound just like Sirius."
"How much longer?" I whined.
"We're finished."
I sat up abruptly. "Get in!"
I jumped out of my chair and held out my hand for him.
"Après vous, monsieur."
He laughed. "When did you learn to speak French?" He cocked his brow.
"Oh, as a bebe, oui oui." I said in a crappy French accent.
He took my hand and we walked through the castle together to the Hufflepuff dorms.
"You didn't have to walk me. I know my way around the castle by now."
"I was just trying to be a gentleman."
I smiled. "More like a knight in shining armour. If Filch catches you after curfew, you'll be in serious trouble."
"He won't catch me. I have this." He pulled a piece of parchment from his pockets.
I kissed him sweetly on the cheek. "Goodnight my gentleman."
I cast one more glance at the flustered boy before taking myself to bed.
