14: Calm before the storm

Messrs Moony, Wormtail, Padfoot, and Prongs walked into the Great Hall at dinner time, wrapped in toilet roll like mummies.

They dragged themselves past everyone to where me, Lily, Marlene, Mary, and Alice were sat.

"I'm gonna kill that fucking fox," James growled.

"Oh no!" Lily exclaimed sarcastically. "Finally getting a taste of your own medicine?"

"That's the thing. We haven't been able to pull any pranks this month because of that bloody fox!" Sirius complained, tearing away chunks of toilet roll.

"Rem?" I turned to the lycanthrope beside me. "You okay?"

The full moon had only been two days ago. Madam Pomfrey let him out since he did really have any injuries, but told us to keep an eye on him. It wasn't bad at all compared to last time.

"'S 'cause you were there," he'd mumbled to me in the Hospital Wing the night after.

"Really?" I'd responded quietly, stroking his hair.

He hummed. "He liked watching you fly."

"Who?"

"Moony. The wolf. Wh'tever you call him."

"I'll keep that in mind," I'd told him, internally a bit flattered that the wolf approves of me.

Today, he just looked at me and shrugged. "Tired."

I hummed. "Want some help with your bandages, mummy? Or should I call you daddy?"

"I will cornobble you," he threatened.

"Cornobble?!" I laughed. "What on earth does that mean?"

"To hit someone in the head, often with a fish."

I snorted. "Of course you know that word!"

With that, I pulled my wand out of my hair and swished it, sending the paper away from him into James' face.

"Oi!" He shouted over Lily's obnoxious wheeze laugh.

Remus smiled, and my heart leapt.

"Okay, you gonna eat now, Moons?"

He nodded, sending a grateful smile my way.

"Oh great! You're in on their funky nicknames!" Marlene remarked, earning a laugh out of everyone in the group.

"Indeed!" Sirius grinned, throwing some more paper on top of Prongs. "In fact, our dear novice here is well on her way to getting her own funky nickname!"

"What?!" The rest of the girls gasped.

"You've joined the dark side, Y/n!" Mary cried dramatically.

I snorted. "I'm just that charming! All the pranksters want me on their team!"

"You sure it's not because the tall one fancies you?" Marlene tilted her head teasingly.
