(Sonic started to explain his side of the story beginning with events before the accident.)

READER'S POV

A blue excitable hedgehog was hanging out with his younger fox brother. He spun in a chair at his brother's place of business distracting the fox from his work.
The fox giggled, "Sonic what are you so excited for?"
Sonic abruptly stopped and motioned with his hands as he talked, "Tails! I get to go on another mission with Shadow. He said G.U.N would allow me to tag along to beat some rusty rogue badniks. He said I didn't have to, but I couldn't refuse an offer like that!" He made some punching motions in the air, "I can't wait! It's been so long since I was able to beat some baddies."

"Sonic, are you sure you want to go?" his younger brother asked.
"Of course! It's been so boring lately. And I'm ready to beat some badnik butt!"

**
"Sonic, you don't have to go with me. it was only a suggestion," the darker hedgehog mentioned.
"Of course I want to tag along with you Shadz." Sonic wrapped his arm around his partner's neck, "you know I'll take an opportunity to defend our city, and it's not like you're making me go. I want to go!"

**
Rouge, Sonic, and Shadow met before the mission to discuss the circumstances.
Rouge spoke to the pair, "from what we know these are not under anyone's control. These bad badniks were stored in the old abandoned warehouse and they booted up from a previously lightning storm. Unfortunately they are now roaming with the intent to do harm. We need to suppress these bots so that they don't wander into the city and cause harm to anyone."

Sonic swayed on the heels of his feet and Shadow listened with focus.

Rouge spoke again, "the bots are scattered everywhere near this building, and it may be better having forces from different sides."

**
Sonic and Shadow arrived separately from Rouge to the scene. Many broken bots roamed around inside and outside of the warehouse.

The darker older hedgehog was calm, but Sonic jittered with excitement.
The blue hedgehog spoke up, "You guys handle these bots out here and I'll go get the ones on the inside of the warehouse."
"Are you sure that's a safe plan?" Shadow asked, doubting Sonic's ability to self navigate.
Sonic disregarded him, "It's fine. Don't worry."

Sonic nudged the darker hedgehog, "I'll go in, beat some up, and come back to meet with you and Rouge to assist on your side."
Shadow sighed, "I won't need your help. I'm sure I can manage on my own."

Sonic shrugged and grinned, "sure, sure, and when I crush more than you then we will see who needs whose help."
Shadow stared blankly at him, "it's not a race to see who can beat up the most..."
Shadow grabbed Sonic's hand and gave him a tender kiss on his ring. "But I believe you will do your best."
Sonic blushed down at his partner.

Sonic, now filled with more confidence, jumped and was ready to take off.
"Hey... Sonic." The darker hedgehog spoke up from behind.
Sonic turned to face him, "Yeah?"
"Be careful..." Shadow said.
Sonic smiled and gave Shadow a heroic thumbs up before taking off on his own.

Inside the warehouse Sonic played a sneaky game of pouncing and pummeling a couple of the smaller bots. The joy of beating up the badniks was getting to his head and he jumped out of hiding. Badniks rushed toward him but he always managed to dodge and jump to avoid them. He threw himself at them and managed to pummel all of them into bits and pieces.

"Too easy," he said, dusting his hands.

He looked over and saw one larger bot that was bigger than the rest. It carried a tank on its back with warning labels all over it. Sonic squinted his eyes and tried to read it from afar, but he couldn't quite read what the labels said.
"Warning labels, this one must be bad news," he said to himself.

The blue hedgehog looked past the bot and noticed Shadow and Rouge peeking their heads over some rubble. Shadow had a gun in his hand and had it pointed at the large badnik.

"Not today, Shadow. This one is mine."
Sonic grabbed a stone off of the ground and he started to spin dash in one place to build up speed. He used the force of his momentum to fling the rock at the badnik like a bullet hoping it would go straight through the motherboard and leave the bot dysfunctional.

But, a miscalculation sent the stone towards the tanks on the back of the bot causing an explosion.

The rock ricocheted right back and knocked into Sonic's head causing him to to go unconscious. Many other pieces of shrapnel quickly blew and caused more harm. Impacting the hedgehog and leaving him with a brutally bloody head injury.

Moments passed, and Sonic came to. He was on his back staring at the ceiling. He couldn't hear anything past the ringing in his ears, and smoke smothered the air clogged his senses. He felt a sharp heavy pain pulse in his skull, and his left eye felt disoriented and blind.

Sonic managed to raise up. He used the wall as support and started to stumble forward. His feet felt heavy and slow with every step.
"I need..." he cupped his hand over his temple. "I need to find..."

His hand started to be filled with a warm liquid. He paused his steps and began to sway. He removed his hand from his head and saw that his palm was covered in fresh blood. It dripped from his head causing droplets to land near his feet.

"Shadow... I've got to find.. Shadow.."

Sonic succumbed to his injuries and fell to the ground. Blood dripped from head and pooled over his face, nearly suffocating his nose and mouth.
All he could think about was returning and being beside his partner, and with Shadow being the last thing on his mind...He soon passed out.

(Back to the current story)

Sonic finished up his side of the story, "I'm sorry Shadow..." he said.
Shadow's chest felt sharp and his eyes started to tear up. He was left stunned and unable to speak.

Sonic, realizing this, grabbed Shadow and wrapped his arms tightly around his body, holding his partner close, "I'm sorry if I ever said anything to blame you, none of this is your fault."

Shadow returned the hug holding onto Sonic's body afraid to release him.

The pair was exhausted and wanted nothing more than to hold onto each other as if one or the other was about to disappear.
"I'm tired Shadow...", Sonic said with sleepy eyes.
Shadow dropped his head, "me to..."

The pair toppled over and stayed curled up with one another for the rest of the evening.
