chapter twenty-three

Sunny and Kel baked amazing cookies ! (thanks to Sunny, else the house would've burned.)
Sunny always used to watch Mari making her cookies, and sometime, he helped her. he never admitted before, but he kind of liked baking. not like Hero in the past, but he did. the cookies were still a bit hot, yet Kel took one of them and bite it.

Kel swallowed and he looked at Sunny with a big smile.

-"they taste so good ! i had no idea you were this good at baking."

-"i used to watch and help Mari in the past.. i guess that's why ?" Sunny chuckled, but pronouncing his sister's name made him a bit uneasy.

-"damn, she'd be proud of you, like always !"

-"thank you Kel... i'm glad. do you know what time is it ?"

-"it's 6:27pm !"

-"only ? i thought it was later."

-"naah ! come and eat a cookie, you're the one who made them delicious !" he handed Sunny a cookie with a contagious smile. he smiled back and he took it.

it's been a while since he ate something...

-"i wont throw up a small cookie, will i ?"

Sunny took a bite, and indeed.

delicious.

he had forgotten about all of the tastes when eating something. everything tasted like shit, but that was a first ! Sunny finally felt a good taste ! he ate all of his cookie and drank a bit of water after.

even the water had a normal taste.. it was not the taste of salty water or chlorine.

-"so how is it ?" Kel asked.

-"delicious, like you said..." Sunny had a small smile, but Kel had a big one. he was glad that Sunny ate something.

-"future baker, i say." he nudged Sunny's shoulder and chuckled.

ouch. right in healing scars.

Sunny chuckled at Kel's joke beside the small jolt he felt by the nudge on his scars. he couldn't blame Kel, he didn't knew he had some of them right there.

-"i don't think so."

-"well i think so !" Kel kept smiling goofily. Sunny had a smile on his face, and Kel suddenly cupped his face.

-"look at you ! all cute while smiling ! you should smile more, Sunshine !"

he started to blush, and he faked being annoyed.

-"ugh, stop it.." he rolled his eyes.

-"how can i stop ? you're the cutest !"

Sunny was back home, the place he never wanted to go back.

the last time he saw his father... he shouted at him. he hit him.

his father was back home earlier than he thought he would. he sighed, and went in.
his mother was on the sofa, smoking and watching the TV, like always. he hated his life at this house.

how much he envies Kel's life, he always makes things look like they're easy.

-"oh sweetie ! you're home !" his mother looked at him with a sweet smile.

the only thing he was hoping to not happen.

now his father would know he was there. he made a small sign to say hello, and he immediately went upstairs to avoid his father.

he sat on his bed, lost in his thoughts. he was bored. he wanted to spend more time with Kel. he was his safe place, he knew nothing bad could happen when he was near him.

Kel was just chilling in his room. he heard his parents and Hero come back, along with Sally yelling happily like always. Sally's birthday is quite close to Kel's too ! it's in 3 weeks... she would be a year old ! but his thoughts went darker in a second.

Hero... was he still mad ? did he really not care about his own brother anymore ?

...

he brushed off the negative thoughts and distracted himself.

but,

Hero came in. well he had to, since they are sharing their room. they didn't know that Sunny came over, and left just like 20 minutes ago... he wondered why Hero was faking so much around Sunny.

a knock on the bedroom door, and it opened, revealing his mother.

-"Kel, did you bake cookies ?" she asked, curious.

the cookies... of course ! but... Sunny baked them. well, i guess he just had to lie.

-"yeah, i thought that would be cool and i was bored so..." he chuckled, scratching the back of his head.

-"naturally, you would burn the house down... you're sure someone didn't help you ?" she was just teasing her son, not knowing at all who came over.

-"made by the only one Kelsey !" he said proudly. (thanks to Sunny.)

-"oh great ! that's good, Kel. making progress !"
-"thanks, mama. what is Sally doing ?"
-"oh she's playing around in the living room..."
-"then i'll go play with her !" he gets up from his bed happy to have some time with his baby sister, but... Hero intervened.
-"just a moment, i need to talk with you." he spoke so dryly. Kel nodded and their mother left.

Kel sat back on his bed, wondering what Hero wanted.

-"Kel, i don't think you understand the gravity of the situation." he spoke dryly again.
-"what do you mean ?" he was already getting annoyed by this talk.
-"Sunny literally killed Mari, and Basil hung her body, they lied to us for 4 years straight ! how can you be.. so... forgiving !? how can you forgive and forget !?" Hero rose his tone a bit. Kel didn't like that.
-"Hero, we already had this talk. first off, i forgave the both of them because they were kids, they panicked and even though their acts were wrong, i knew that being mad at them wouldn't lead to anything ! so you know what i did ? i took a deep breath, i gathered my feelings, and i overcame this. and this doesn't mean that i don't care about Mari, or either her death, and all of this stuff ! i learned to overcome, and to accept things the way they are. you should do as much as me."

Kel explained himself once again.

-"anyway, i'm done with this. i don't want to argue about this for years." and on that, Kel went downstairs. he will play with Sally, in hope to distract himself.
