the forgotten promise

"Make sure to read pages three through eight in your textbooks, we will be having an exam next class!"

Sadie sighed heavily as she packed up her things after Latin. She had taken her seat next to Annick as usual, and was relieved to finish the class after having to endure another hour of the teacher praising the boys while he ignored her and Annick. It didn't matter that they were the best in the class for the subject, because Mr. Felbec could conjugate 'esse', and Applebaum is so studious as he reads through his textbook, or Mr. Belkacem's side profile looks just like Horace!

At this point, she wasn't sure if Mr. Douillard didn't like the girls, or just really liked the boys.

Sadie and Annick started to leave the room, taking the stairs.

"Another Latin class, another day of getting ignored," she grumbled.

Annick stayed silent as she walked, resignation clear in the way she carried herself.

"I'll just get a top grade on the next exam," Sadie stated, pumping a fist as she suddenly became determined. "Maybe then he'll pay attention to me."

"I hope you're talking about me, or my feelings would be hurt," Descamps said, placing himself to her left.

She shut her eyes to take a deep breath, knowing she had left class as quickly as possible to hopefully avoid another interaction with the blonde. But she could see he used his abnormally long legs to his advantage. His friends easily caught up to the pair of them as well, though they instead focused their attention on Annick.

"What do you want, Descamps," she groaned, keeping her gaze forward.

He smirked as he placed an arm around her shoulders, to which she swiftly knocked it off and looked up at him, completely unamused. He held his hands up in the air at her stare, before saying, "I just wanted to say hi! You didn't sit next to me in Latin!"

"What, did you miss me so?"

"Of course not, I just wanted to make sure you didn't miss me and my nice smile," he purposely flashed a toothy grin at her, pulling out all the stops as the dimples made their regular appearance.

Her jaw dropped as her cheeks burned at yesterday's memory right after school, before snapping back and elbowing him in the arm. Hard.

"OW!" he yelped, smile wiped from his face as he grabbed his arm dramatically. "Why are your elbows so knobby, Devereaux?!"

"You're so annoying," she groaned, turning away from him to face Annick once again.

The poor girl, bless her soul, looked like she wanted to be anywhere but near her company, but said nothing as the six of them continued to walk outside.
