sadie being awkward
—Today, Sadie affirmed, is just like any other day.
She made sure to wear her famous white dress and make her braid have no loose ends this morning, disappointing Martine. But the frumpiness gave her confidence. She awkwardly clutched her school bag tight to her body as she and Martine walked through the school gates. She tried her best not to look around her as she walked on towards the front steps to meet up with the rest of her friends.
"Okay, seriously, what is up with you," Martine asked, side-eying her as they walked through the courtyard.
Sadie nervously laughed, "What are you talking about, Marty?"
"You've been off ever since you opened the door! Is there something wrong with my hair? Did you get your period? Are you dying?"
She laughed genuinely at that. "No, no, and no—thankfully," she answered, shaking herself a little to pull herself together. "Nothing's wrong! Just getting ready for Homeroom with Giraud, that's all!"
Martine continued to give her a skeptical look, before they made it to Monique and the rest of the girls.
"Good morning, ladies," she greeted, ignoring Martine.
The rest of them spared their share of greetings and smiles, before Monique started talking.
"As I was saying, do you guys know what day it is?"
Sadie felt herself start to sweat at the question, while the rest of the girls shook their heads.
Did Monique know what day it was? She wondered, feeling her heart start to beat a little too fast.
"We're supposed to start brainstorming for the fundraiser today," she answered, making Sadie breathe a sigh of relief. The rest of the girls started to chatter excitedly at the mention of the field trip once again.
"I can't believe we're gonna go to Paris!" one of the girls squealed.
Another spoke up, "I'm honestly not the biggest fan of Paris, but I can't wait to spend five days with the boys."
"Ugh, I know! I get to be with Jean Dupin for five days in the city of love!"
Sadie pulled a face at that part, finding that particular detail of the trip as more of a downside.
"Hey, I saw that look Sadie," one of the girls whined, causing the rest of the girls to chuckle. "It's so unfair you get to have him in your form!"
She wrinkled her nose. "You can have him if you want. I'd love for you to take him out and transfer him for anybody else."
Martine laughed as the girl complained about the unfairness of the form lists. "Honestly, who cares about the boys here? I'm more interested in the Parisian boys than anyone else!"
