[thirty-three]
"get your head out of your pants and in the game!"
—Besides her lovely reunion with Molly, it was right before the game the following day that Sadie had realized her Friday had been much...quieter than usual. She wasn't sure why. However, it became fairly clear to her after seeing a sulky Joseph Descamps.
Sadie was walking with Martine as they approached the football field, Descamps and his friends not too far behind them. The two girls had been discussing Martine's latest conquest, which turned out to be Belkacem, when they overheard Vergoux's obnoxious complaints.
"What the hell happened to you?" Vergoux asked the boy, "You've been acting like someone stole your eyepatch, or something. Why're you so moody?!"
"Shut up, Charlie," Descamps grunted, making her turn around to glimpse the blond herself.
And to be fair, Vergoux wasn't too far off. Descamps had the biggest scowl on his face, his eyebrows furrowed so deeply, his eye squinted to the point of only being able to see the annoyance in it. Not to mention the ticked frown on his lips that highlighted his clenched jaw. It didn't help that the downpour of rain made his typically fluffy blond hair sleek and dark.
Sadie personally couldn't relate, as she had a great day. And she adored the rain. She wore a thick yellow raincoat over her outfit to protect her, but refused to stay under Martine's umbrella as she enjoyed the feeling of the rain's pitter patter through her hair. It made Martine sigh, but continue to walk near the girl that was already soaked to the bone.
"Wonder what's got him so upset," Martine remarked, glancing over her shoulder as well.
Sadie shrugged. "I don't know, but he hasn't talked to me since Homeroom."
After Descamps had pestered her for her favorite singer and song from them that morning, they'd gone their separate ways for break. After that, the boy had been in a bad mood—not that Sadie had noticed, with being so preoccupied by the other girls and their endless questions of what had happened with Casiro. First it was Simone, then Michèle, before trickling over to other girls in the year. She had rolled her eyes, stuffing down the flush in her cheeks, and reluctantly filled them in throughout the entirety of the day. Her story ended up exciting all of the girls even more for the game, which was why when she and Martine had shown up to the field, they were able to see it packed even more than expected.
"Lord, and I thought the auction was crowded," Martine whistled.
Sadie nodded in agreement, before they went to sit down.
"Hey! Martine!" a voice called.
Sadie and Martine turned to see Belkacem, waving her over to him and his friends. To Sadie's chagrin, they sat far away from the girls and instead with the rest of the boys in the year.
