Isla Venus
Just as I was wrapping up the last of my homework for my AP courses, I heard a chime on my phone. I checked it, wondering who it could be. Could it be Jasper asking about some writing thing? Or those two new kids, Alexa and Harry? Maybe it was someone in my family. I didn't know, they did text me at times.
Unknown: hi this is breena
Unknown: This is summer
Isla: How did you guys get my number?
Breena: we exchanged numbers the other day u dont remember
Isla: Oh, right, sorry
Summer: No it's fine
Breena: we were just wondering if u wanna come to hang out with us
Summer: Yeah it's spring break
Isla: I'll ask my mom and Hana, where?
Summer: Idk
Breena: we could come over to ur house or u could come over to one of ours
Isla: I'll ask my mom and let you know...
I headed downstairs. It was a bit of a workout since the house was large and my bedroom was on the third floor. Honestly, I still couldn't believe how privileged I was to live in such a nice house. Even if I'd faced difficulties in other aspects of my life, it was something I was grateful for. Living in a mansion had its benefits. For one, every room looked beautiful. There were chandeliers and spiraling staircases, large windows and beautiful wall decorations. My house even had a gaming room and mini theater downstairs, an outdoor pool, a room for a jacuzzi, a home gym and an entire library with over 1,000 books that was across from my bedroom.
I headed to my mom's office where she was typing up a report. "Hi mom, are you busy?" I asked.
She finished typing then looked up. "Yes?"
"Can I invite some friends over, friends from school? This Saturday from 2-5 PM PDT?' I asked timidly.
She beamed radiantly, "of course."
Smiling, I quickly texted Summer and Breena, "my mom said yes, you can go to my house. Just ask your parents if you're available this Saturday from 2-5 PM PDT."
Breena and Summer were coming over to my house. This was strange for me. After I'd cleaned my bedroom I couldn't even work on my book, this was too nerve-wracking for me. The last time I'd invited someone over, it had been Regina. And my house was much smaller so I wasn't shoving my privilege into her face or making her feel uncomfortable because I had a big house. So, I literally paced around the room until the doorbell rang.
Fortunately, Breena and Summer were nice. We didn't talk about anything uncomfortable and just dove into talking about school. About assignments and teachers and students and spring break and stuff. My mom had also gotten along with Breena and Summer's parents and they'd exchanged numbers.
It had been a long time since I'd hung out with anyone so I didn't know what to expect. So for the first hour or so, I just sat around awkwardly and munched on snacks while Breena and Summer talked animatedly.
Eventually, Summer noticed the tension and said, "why don't we play a board game or something?"
I shrugged, "honestly, I just don't know what to expect, I haven't hung out with anyone in a long time," I admitted.
Breena beamed, "it's fine, we mostly just do random things when we hang out. There are no expectations. Once we just browsed through Amazon without buying anything. Another time we did a whole bunch of Buzzfeed quizzes," she said.
