"Peggy, it seems like you hid something just now. I saw it. Can you show me?" I straightforwardly asked Peggy.
"It's my diary. Do you want to read a girl's diary? Shameless!" Peggy replied, her eyes flickering.
"Really?" I didn't hide my skepticism.
"We're in this kind of relationship, and you still don't trust me?" Peggy glared at me.
I paused for a moment, looking at her. "We're stranded on a deserted island, which is unfortunate. But luckily, I met you, and I'm happy to be with you. I don't mind if you have secrets, but if one day you're willing to tell me, I can share the burden with you."
Peggy hugged me emotionally, looking into my eyes. "Zheng, I don't want to deceive you. Please trust me; I won't do anything to betray you all."
On the surface, Peggy and I seemed to have reconciled. We both tried to treat each other as we did before, but an invisible layer of subtle estrangement appeared between us. Our intimacy wasn't as frequent as it used to be. Countless speculations surged in my mind about Peggy. I even thought she might not be part of a rescue team but came for the island's secret, just like those Japanese people many years ago.
"Maybe I'm overthinking it. There's no solid evidence of any secrets on this island so far. It's all just my speculation." I could only console myself in this way.
So, a few days passed in the blink of an eye. During this time, we hunted for food, searched for a new place to live, and remained cautious of Hu Yijian's group. Several days had passed, and there was still no movement from Hu Yijian. We were almost relaxing our vigilance, thinking they might be preoccupied on this deserted island and wouldn't come looking for trouble. We couldn't help but think this way, although I had dealt with Li Xulong. Had they chosen to remain silent?
Unexpectedly, on this particular night, things took a turn. They indeed resorted to insidious means to trap us! Tonight, as usual, I was on the night watch, and in the distance, the forest echoed with the eerie howls of wolves. I knew there was a wolf pack nearby, and on cold nights, they would howl at the moon. This was not something new.
Previously, we slept early and hadn't heard much of it, but during these few nights on watch, I frequently heard their mournful howls. Initially, I was a bit scared, but after getting used to it, I didn't find it unsettling anymore. However, tonight felt different; I faintly sensed that the howls were louder, and they seemed closer to us.
Soon, the wolf howls abruptly ceased. Initially, I didn't pay much attention, but after a while, when I went outside for a bathroom break, I suddenly caught a whiff of a strong, metallic scent in the air. This made me feel uneasy. I looked around, and to my surprise, near our cave, there was a pool of fresh blood mixed with chunks of flesh. Moreover, it wasn't just one pool; every few steps, there was another, extending all the way towards the direction of the forest.
