Unexpected

Dear Jesus,

My mouth hung open and I couldn't find words for a full minute.

"Trisha?! Are you kidding me?"

Yup, Trisha, with a wry grin on her face, was standing in front of me in all her glory. Her lush black hair was fuller and her skin glowed even more beautifully than it had been while she was the beauty queen of Charios High. And I thought she had put on a little more flesh to her cheeks.

Was I hallucinating? How come I hadn't known she would be here today? I blinked and was about to engulf her in a warm embrace when suddenly another face popped out of the door. I stared into the face of Genevie, my one-time bully-turned-friend.

I screamed, and she did the same, grinning from ear to ear.

I had not recovered from the shock of seeing the pampered face of Gen when Kathy came out, an almost imperceptible smirk on her face as if she was a satisfied mother hen.

As I spluttered and the rest of my friends came out, I was certain this was a set-up they'd connived behind my back.

I crossed my hands over my chest and pouted as I stepped back in a bid to gather my emotions.

"So, you were planning all this behind my back. You girls want me to have trust issues," I said.

"No o" Pris started to protest.

"We didn't know they'd be coming until we saw them at our doorstep too!" Portia added eagerly.

"Surprise!" Trisha and Gen echoed, unnecessarily, sounding like twin clowns.

"How did you guys meet up? How did you find our place?" I asked.

Gen winked mischievously and sashayed into the house, causing all of us to follow.

"We've been asking them nonstop! This big head called Gen said they'll not tell us anything until you arrive and that's why I had to call you to drag you down here," Kathy said.

"Me, I'm just happy that I finally get to meet the renowned Queen bees of Charios High," Portia said, checking them out coolly. I rolled my eyes.

Trisha snapped her head at me, humour dancing in her eyes.
"No way! Tell me you don't still go about calling us that."

Gen kissed her teeth as she sank into the couch and reclined as if this was a palace she owned.

"Wonderful," she clapped. "This Ray girl talks of trust issues while she is the mother of betrayal."

I laughed, so happy to hear her witty banter again, and sat beside her. Trisha sat on the other side beside me.

Their surprise visit made me remember Hirena, my half-caste cousin (to whom I'm officially no longer biologically related). We've only been in touch via online chats. Which was still good, considering how I was trying to figure out how to let her know that we weren't exactly blood relatives anymore. I think it'll be best for my parents to sort out those grey areas at the appropriate time.

"You have to tell me all about your journey! Are you on a holiday or something? How is college life in the UK?" I said.

"Hey, hey, chill... I'll answer your questions one by one, but first, you have to unwrap the gift we bought for you. Sorry we missed your birthday, Ray. Hope it isn't too late," Gen said as she motioned to Trisha to bring something. Trisha went inside the room to bring out something from their luggage, I suppose.

It was a small branded shopping bag and when I opened it, I was shocked by what I saw. It was a custom-made lab set, with a stethoscope that had my name imprinted on it in lilac cursive.
