Pride and Pity

I want strength; I want pride; be king of all;

I fight for strength; I lost--bled, yet have naught;

What tragedy! What robbery! I gasp, appalled!

I despair--the darkness comes; now, I plot!

I am king! the crown is mine!--but she grieves--

The man soars! Carved off angels' wings-- I fly!

I think myself great--but they fear me -- hate me;

How? I am strong! They are weak! I feel pride!

The angels beg, serfs pity--Men answer their pain.

My journey! My despair! My hope! My fall!

I sought strength; I won; they beat me-- all shame;

Pity is plain; Pride is rare; pride is mauled.
