I playfully swung my dagger in between my fingers waiting for the boss to show up after he declared a meeting for an emergency mission. A strange inkling that he's planning something by the sudden call to do a mission after I just finished one lingers in the back of my mind. He's not one to do this usually but I push the thought away, trusting my boss who I've been working under for years. Unless he's doing something stupid again, it has happened before.
My grip tightens anxiously on my dagger hearing the creaky door hinges from behind me that echo through the office, announcing the presence of someone. I hurriedly remove my legs dangling over the leg of the chair and sit up straighter only aware of the boss calling me in for this mission. But when I glance back, my neutral expression turns into a scowl making direct eye contact with my greatest competition in our department. Sim Jaeyun.
The dagger in my hands begging to be set free to throw at him but I tucked it away with a silent sigh knowing that wouldn't be a smart move. It wouldn't get me anything except fulfill my own selfish desire to stick this dagger right through him. But the real question is what the hell is he doing here? I thought this was a solo mission. A similar expression mirroring my own appears on his displeased face, his hand casually pulling out his phone to check to make sure he read the boss's message right.
"He messaged you about this mission too?" Jaeyun asks, sitting in the seat next to mine and clicking his phone back into the holder he had on his belt for it. My eyes linger there longer than intended seeing the leather pants hugging his thighs ever so tightly, but I divert my eyes almost as soon as they begin to trail down his legs longer than I'd like to admit. This is no time to get distracted by his thighs of all things. Damn you, Sim Jaeyun, for wearing leather pants today of all days.
"Sadly but I wouldn't have taken on the mission if I had known you were assigned to it as well," I say flatly knowing the feeling was mutual from the not so subtle rivarily we've had brewing for years, "I thought this was a solo mission."
"Couldn't agree more," he mumbles under his breath and nothing more is said for the next few minutes. A somewhat tense silence engulfs the atmosphere but when the door creaks loudly again, the boss enters with a small smile and a large file in his hands. Great, the mission must be a more complex one too.
"Good you're both here already," the boss says, adjusting his tie before he sits in his large rolling chair behind his desk. He lays the file on the desk with a heavy sigh and absentmindedly taps his finger on it, "This mission may be the most important mission I've ever asked you both to take on."
"I'm honored, sir," I thank him with a small smile immediately before he can go on, but feel a pinch of annoyance at the sudden announcement of a mission. Not only that, but I'll be taking it on with Jaeyun of all people, "truly I am but I must ask, does it have to be done alongside him?"
"You're both the top spies of the agency in comparison to anyone, nobody can even come close to you two. The both of you have managed to complete missions in under a day that took other spies months. For this job, I need the best of the best," he states and pushes the large file towards us, "and that's final."
I don't miss the way Jaeyun scoffs quietly but accepts the command of the boss nonetheless, grabbing the file without a word. His fingers annoyingly tapping against the stack of papers waiting for the next order from the boss. I grumble under my breath when ignoring the way his fingers seem to be almost if they're drumming right in my ears instead of on the paper. I take a copy of the same file, holding it under my arm and groan internally at how heavy it feels. Great, lots of reading to just make it even better.
The meeting feels agonizingly slow but as soon as the words leave the boss's mouth dismissing us, neither of us can bear to say in each other's presence a second more. It's only outside of the office does Jaeyun slip me a small paper making me raise an eyebrow at him in question. He mutters a quiet curse but he takes my free hand, opening up my palm and nonchalantly places a piece of paper in my hand.
