Upon returning to the Agency, Midas hastened to his room. It was still early and he was sure Olivia would still be asleep. Along with that, he did not want to trigger suspicion amongst the agents. As he walked into his bedroom, he found Olivia sitting on the edge of the bed, and she slowly turned her head to look at him.
Her face flushed with bright notes of red, her eyes wide open and her mouth agape upon finding Midas there. She had no idea how to hide the clear expressions on her face as she stood up.
Midas smirked at her reaction. He moved towards her direction, and closer he got, the more radiant she looked. His own face had a slight hint of red from just looking at her. As soon as he was an arm-length away, he reached out to tuck a strand of her hair behind her ear, leaving her taken aback. "Sleep well?"
She could not find her voice and was afraid to answer. As her heart raced, her breathing became faster and she couldn't focus on anything other than the man in front of him. To her, it felt like her heart would explode. Midas noticed her non-reactivity and it didn't look right to him. He grabbed her by the shoulders and sat her down on the bed. She looked at him and said "what do I do?"
"About what?" He replied with an unintentional chuckle which escaped him due to how endearing he found her to be.
She closed her eyes tightly before hesitantly uttering the next few words "Midas, I think I-"
"I think you need to go back to your gran." He cut her sentence short, preventing her from completing her answer. "No, it's not what I think. It's an order from me. You must go back to her."
Olivia opened her eyes in a disappointed disbelief. Her expression changed drastically, which wasn't something Midas was expecting. Those eyes full of wonder and excitement suddenly turned dull and hopeless, and she instantly looked away once she realised Midas had been staring at her for too long. She did not want him to get the wrong idea. "Really? Then I better back my things." She didn't sound enthusiastic at all while saying these words. She stood up and darted out of his room without a word, leaving him dumbfounded.
He saw it coming. The look on her face said it all. She was ready to confess her feelings for him, but he didn't want her to. Midas wanted her to get back to Marigold, and he was sure he did the right thing by preventing Olivia from expressing her feelings for him, but a part of his heart had cracked, and the crack was starting to become bigger to shatter his heart.
However, he wasn't the only one feeling despair. Standing in the corridor, Olivia leaned against a wall while clutching onto her shirt near the chest. While Midas's heart was beginning to shatter, hers was already broken. Since the day on the beach, she was sure about her feelings for him, and it took her so long to figure out how to confront Midas about it. It took every cell of her body to finally tell him, but she couldn't even finish her sentence. And now, she was told to pack her things and leave, to live the 'normal' life again.
The Agency was gloomy the entire day. Everyone was up and working again, except for Olivia, and Brutus couldn't help but notice her absence. He walked to Midas to enquire about her. "Boss, I don't think Olivia is up. She usually serves the breakfast around this time."
Midas, who was working on his laptop, looked up at Brutus. "You just reminded me, would you do me a favour and take her back to her grandmother's house?"
Brutus was surprised but he nodded, which made Midas go back to work. "I'm sorry for bothering, but I can't help asking this," he continued "why is Olivia leaving?"
He stopped typing on the keyboard, as he recalled her face and how lovable she seemed before he told her to go back. "She never belonged here."
The agents worked till the evening, and that was when Brutus was able to escort Olivia to Lavenport. She was taken to her grandmother's home, and while she pretended to be happy, her heart sank even more as she went further away from the Agency.
"Olive!" Gran exclaimed upon seeing her, and she reached out to hug her. "You're finally back."
Olivia hugged her back tightly, before pulling back and looking at Brutus, who had already turned around to leave. "Wait, Brutus." He stopped to look at her. "Can you tell everyone that I will miss them?" He gave her a reassuring nod before getting into the taxi and leaving. She felt empty as she saw him leave. Gran had baked her the warmest chocolate chip cookies as a 'welcome back' treat, but even though the cookies were her favourite, Olivia didn't feel like eating them. She sat down on the dining chair, and looked at gran who was sitting across with a smile on her face.
"Perhaps you know everything, where I was, who I was with." Olivia started. "And you know, I think that's the worst part. Please gran, tell me, why did you never tell me about Midas?"
Looking at her intently, gran picked up a chocolate chip cookie and handed it to her, while she took it from her hesitatingly. "I never really knew how to tell you, and in a way I was protecting you."
"Protecting me?"
"You see, Midas is my first love, and he is complex. He gave me so many things, including a new life. If it wasn't for him, I wouldn't have married Eddie, and I wouldn't have given your mother a chance, which meant you'd never be here. But I always find myself asking, did I really want this life? Sometimes, my heart aches when I look back at the sunny days I spent with Midas during my graceful youth. I liked Eddie, but I love Midas."
Olivia noticed the present tense being used by gran whenever she talked about loving Midas, and she felt a sharper pain in her already wounded heart. "So you still love him?"
"Would you hate me if I say yes?" She asked, her eyes curious. "I do, my dear Olive. You don't know but Midas is old. He's way older than me."
"But that's because of the curse." Olivia said this with hopelessness. "Even if you two get together at this age, aren't you afraid of what people will say when they look at the two of you?"
"Does that matter? Love is for all." Gran smiled, but her smile caused distress to Olivia for the first ever time.
She shook her head before changing the subject. "Anyway, let's eat these cookies. I missed them." She couldn't comprehend gran's words and she didn't want to. For the first time, she felt a tinge bitterness towards her own grandmother, a sense of jealousy.
