The day remained bright as Midas accompanied Olivia to gran's house, where she planned to gather a few belongings before returning to the Agency with him. When gran opened the door, her eyes immediately focused on Midas, expressing visible astonishment.
"Midas, what a surprise!" she exclaimed, her gaze bypassing Olivia. "Come on in."
Noticing the disappointment on Olivia's face, Midas observed her grandmother closely. In response, Olivia seized Midas's upper arm, intertwining her own arm with his. Gran's expression shifted to a slight look of disdain. They entered the house and proceeded to the living room, where Olivia sat on the couch, motioning for Midas to join her. With a gentle smile, he complied. Gran, observing their interactions, sighed in frustration and settled into her rocking chair.
"I hope I'm not disturbing you, Mari," Midas said with a grin.
"You're not," Olivia replied on her grandmother's behalf. "Gran doesn't mind having an old friend over."
"Absolutely, you're more than welcome to stay here Midas." Marigold said. "It gets so lonesome, Olivia isn't even home half of the time. She never stayed at home growing up either, always out in the neighbourhood, this one."
There was an awkward silence, as Olivia's emotions took over and her face flushed. "I was out because I was earning for us."
"Earning? More like stealing." Gran scowled and shook her head.
Her statement shocked Olivia. She always thought gran wasn't aware of what she was doing and how she was earning the money. With her mouth agape, she turned to stare at Midas, suspecting him. But Midas shook his head and sighed. "Mari isn't ignorant, she already knew what you were up to and never stopped you, because I-" he hesitated before completing his sentence "I was paying back the people you stole from. Mari and I kept contact by writing to each other."
"Gran, you were the one who told Midas?" Her eyes watered and were near tears.
"Midas was helping us. You think Eddie, your grandfather, left a fortune for me? Your parents didn't leave anything for you either, except for their house which we had to sell. There were days I didn't have anything to eat because I was feeding you, Olive. When things became tough, I had to reach out to Midas. He was more than happy to help us. I promised that I would pay him when you became older, but you chose to go down a vile path. I was ashamed but I had to ask him for help again, and he decided to recruit you after you unintentionally saved him." Mari explained, her voice trembling while she looked exhausted.
Olivia remembered meeting Midas for the first time at the Agency when he kidnapped her, the terms he had voiced that she had to fulfil. "Whatever you've stolen, you have to repay it to me" he had said to her before presenting her the document of the amount she owed to him, a total of two hundred thousand dollars. She turned to face him, unable to hold the tears. "I owe you way more than two hundred thousand dollars."
He grabbed her by the shoulders "No, you don't-" he couldn't finish his sentence because Mari interrupted "Yes you do, you owe him way more than that. You owe him your life." She stood up and feebly walked to the kitchen.
Olivia pushed away Midas and stood up before rushing out of the house, but he couldn't let her go alone. He rushed behind her and chased her while she sprinted away with her nimbleness. "Olivia, wait up."
She stopped and turned around, the distance between them wasn't close but he could clearly see the tears glistening down her face and he had never seen her so upset. She looked as if she lost the purpose of her life and it was heart wrenching for him to see her like this. He walked towards her, but she stepped back, so he stopped in his footsteps.
"What else are you two hiding from me?" She asked with a voice that had no life in it. "Tell me, I'm ready to hear it all."
"I can promise you, there is nothing more." He said apologetically, his golden eye peering into her face as it shone in the bright light. She could see the fear in his eye, for the first ever time.
She shook her head. "I know there is more. I just know it. Why did gran say I owe you my life? She never says things metaphorically."
"I admit, there was more before" he sighed "but things have changed. I was supposed to use you as a sacrifice to get rid of my curse. But you became too dear and too important to me."
"Did she suggest it?" Olivia asked, stepping closer to Midas. "Did gran suggest it?"
He avoided her gaze, and thought about all the secrets he had kept from her. He couldn't do it anymore, not when she was already so heartbroken. "She might have suggested it, yes. But the final decision was up to me, and I chose not to."
The betrayal she felt in every cell of her body weakened her to the point where she wasn't even able to stand. Her legs shook abruptly before she collapsed on the ground, but Midas grabbed her by the waist and pulled her up, being her pillar of support.
"I want to be away from this place." She said meekly with the very little energy she had left.
He assured her with a nod and helped her walk towards his car. The driver opened the backdoor so that Midas could support her into the car before sitting himself on the opposite side. As he did that, he felt a gaze staring at them, and upon looking up at the window of Marigold's house, he found his old love who was no longer the same, staring at them with sorrow. The two gave each other one last look, her eyes telling him not to leave, but he was ready to cut ties with her for what had ensued.
