A week had passed since they had returned from their little trip to the beach and the agents were back to work, better than ever. Everyone had their missions to focus on, whether it was infiltration, intel analysis, or downloading and uploading intel to the databases, no one was left without a task. Midas was working harder than before, spending most of his time in the spy base, overseeing all the operations. There was very little probability of error, since all the agents were trained well, except for Olivia. Infiltration would put her in unnecessary danger, and intel analysis wasn't her forte, so Midas had assigned her to be in charge of the meals.
She had argued and fought against this decision, but it was a final one. She was to cook meals for everyone. However, she wasn't the only one against this decision, all the agents had always noticed how odd her tastebuds were, and they didn't quite like the idea of having a cook who'd prefer eating cereals in orange juice rather than milk. Midas, on the other hand, refused to listen to anyone. He rarely changed his final decision.
Olivia dragged a large bag into the spy base which contained lunchboxes for everyone. She passed them around the room, giving them to each of the agents who were working hard. Brutus received two boxes, and he looked at Olivia with a confused reaction. "Give one of them to Midas." Avoiding eye contact, she said before leaving with the bag.
Midas noticed this interaction, and he sighed before getting up and following Olivia out of the room. As she walked down the corridor, he grabbed her arm and yanked her closer to him. "Why are you behaving like this?"
"Like what, boss?" She replied coldly, her gaze like a shard of ice.
But his eye was warmer than the sun. "I want to know, why are you always ignoring me? What did I do this time?"
"Either you're completely daft or you really have no idea," She scoffed "but at the beach, I really thought we had something going on between us."
"There can't be anything between us, Olivia!" He shouted, "I cannot allow it."
For the first ever time, she saw just how angry he could get. The fire in his eye was incinerating and it looked dangerous. He was panting, and his fists were clutched. But he found a way to contain it. He closed his eyes and sighed deeply, visibly looking better. He grabbed her arm and dragged her with him. Olivia was confused and she tried to wriggle out of his grip, but by now she knew it was futile. They headed to Midas's room, which was as luxurious as ever, and he let her go.
He grabbed a paper clip from his desk and held it out. "Look at this." His eye focused on the metallic clip and Olivia's jaw dropped as she saw its colour changing. It transitioned from silver to golden gradually. "Anything I touch becomes gold."
Her shock was clearly evident and she took a few steps back. Shaking her head, she tried to understand how this was possible. "You're probably pulling tricks on me."
"No, I'm not." He tossed the paper clip aside and moved closer to her before reaching out with his hand. "Give me your necklace."
She looked at the necklace she was wearing, the heirloom her grandmother had passed down to her. "I can't give you this."
"Trust me," he sighed "I was the one who gave that to Marigold."
"That's one of the many things that bother me, Midas. Why can't you come clean and tell me about the relationship you shared with my gran?"
"I loved her." He didn't wait for her to complete her sentence before uttering these words, his strong expression turning into a soft one. "She and I were each other's sweethearts."
"You've got to be joking." She laughed, amused at the lie he was spewing. "You and my gran? Not a chance. Look at the age difference."
"Not anymore," he moved closer to her "but when we were kids. It's complicated, trust me."
She looked around to find a seat, before sitting on the Midas's desk chair. All of this was too much to handle, but she was prepared for this. "I've got the entire day, so start from the beginning."
He was surprised at her solemn response, and he cleared his throat before allowing the flashbacks to flow through his mind. The past was flooding and he didn't want to drown, but for the sake of Olivia, he took a leap. "It all began on my tenth birthday."
He visioned himself being a young kid waiting to blow the birthday candles, as his butler cheered and sang happy birthday to him. "Master, go on, make a wish." He closed his eyes and blew the ten candles, one by one, before looking at his butler with a smile. "Marcus, do you want to know what I wished for?"
"I do appreciate that you'd like to tell me master, but birthday wishes are supposed to be your best kept secrets." Marcus cut a slice of cake and placed it in front of the young Midas. "Please have a slice, and let me know how you like the cake." The rest of the cake was carried by Marcus to the kitchen, and when he had returned, he realised that his young master hadn't taken a single bite of the slice of cake. Instead, he was sobbing quietly, staring at the mesmerising cake. This concerned Marcus. "My dear master! What is the matter?"
Wiping his tears, Midas looked at Marcus. "Mother and father didn't make it to my birthday again this year."
"Oh master," Marcus exclaimed before rushing and grabbing a gift box and placing it in front of Midas "your mother and father had to go for that business trip, there was no other option for them. They truly regret not being here, but they sent this wonderful present for you."
Midas stopped sobbing and he hesitantly opened the gift box to find a little kitten. He was ecstatic to see this small bundle of happiness. "It's a kitty!"
"I knew this would make you happy." Marcus smiled while clasping his hands. "Do you have a name in mind, for the kitten?"
He looked at the baby cat and realised how safe it felt in his arms. It purred a loving 'meow' before licking Midas, who giggled at the cat's reaction. "I will call him Meowscles."
"Meowscles?" Marcus was surprised. "I was hoping you would go for a more elegant name like Robert, or George. But if Meowscles is what you want, it shall be so."
Midas wrapped the cat around his arms, and for the rest of the day, he played with Meowscles. Little did he know that playing with Meowscles would lead him to discover something eerie. When the sun was about to set, Meowscles started wandering farther away from Midas while playing, who desperately followed him, and upon catching up with him, he figured out they were far away from his home, and were close to an abandoned cave. He picked up Meowscles and decided to turn around to leave, but just then, a voice called him.
"You are the blood of my blood." The icy voice originating from the cave froze him on the spot. "Come closer to me."
Although he was shaking in fear, Midas decided to walk into the cave, unaware of the dangers posed by it. The deeper he went, the colder it became and the silence of the cave was loud. This was until he reached the end of the cave, which was piled up with huge sums of gold and illuminating brightly. In the far end was a throne on which a skeletal figure sat, a crown placed on his head, which shone as it looked into Midas's direction. "So you are here."
