NASREEN
Algiers, Algeria.
8 Months Later

It's a Saturday morning, meaning I can sleep in while Aamir makes us breakfast today. I come down from the bed and head to the bathroom to take a shower and brush my teeth. All of a sudden, I feel this intense heat warm up my body, making me dizzy instantly. I ignore it and take my shower. Just as I'm about to brush my teeth, I feel the urge to empty my already empty stomach. I rush for the toilet and bring out mostly liquids. I dry hive for some minutes before flushing the toilet and brushing my teeth.

I quickly put on some clothes, thankful that Aamir wasn't in the room when this happened. I drag myself downstairs to meet him in the kitchen. "Good morning to my beautiful wife." He says, walking up to me to give me a hug, that I melt into his embrace, soaking up the warmth from his body.

Immediately, he places his hand on my head he draws back. "What's wrong, Nasreen? Do you feel sick?" He asks, and I nod in the negative. "But your temperature has gone up." He argues, placing his hand on my forehead again.

"It might be because of the change of weather, no biggie." I shrug and walk into the kitchen before he can say anything else. I hear him sigh before he walks in after me to pick up his plate. Just as I pick up my plate, I smell the eggs, causing my insides to constrict.

Why do I feel so quinsy? I try to push it to not make Aamir worry any further. I'm sure I must be coming down with the flu or a fever. I started shoving the food down my throat, but that doesn't last long as I take a large inhale and smell the eggs again, and then I can't hold on to what I had for breakfast anymore.

I run for the guest toilet. I make it just in time to empty my guts, and just as I'm about to get up, I feel Aamir beside me. "You told me nothing is wrong, Nasreen. I'm your husband; don't you think I should be allowed to know why my wife is sick?" He scolds me as he comes into the toilet to help me up.

"I'm sorry, I thought it was nothing serious; that's why I didn't want to bother you." I smile sheepishly as we walk up to our room together. "You might be pricked by a needle, Nasreen, and I'd still want to know what's wrong with you." He emphasises helping me lie in bed.

"Wait here, I'll get a thermometer." He says. He returns with one and places it in my mouth a few minutes after he removes it and reads, "Your temperature is really high. You should get some rest. I'll make some soup for you." He says to get up to adjust me under the blanket before leaving the room.

He returns, maybe almost an hour later, and wakes me up. "Wake up, Nasreen; your soup is here." He says to keep the tray on the bedside table. I don't think I want to eat that now." I groan, dragging the blanket over my head.

"Come on now; you need to have it while it's still hot. Have a few spoons, then I'll make you okay." He tries to bargain. I sigh before sitting up,he helps me adjust the pillows behind my back before passing me the tray. He spoon-fed me the whole bowl, even though I complained throughout.

"Are you sure you don't want to get checked?Your fever isn't dropping." He asks, "I'm fine, Aamir, don't worry." I argue back, placing my hand on his thigh. He sighs beside me as he adjusts himself to lie down beside me.

Just as I start to feel sleepy again, I feel the soup I had coming back up. I run to the toilet as fast as I can to empty what little I had eaten. "That's it. We're going to the hospital, and don't you dare tell me you're going to be fine. I'm getting you something decent to put on, and we're leaving this house. Do you understand me?" He says looking very stressed.

I nod and follow after him. He helps me put on my abaya and hijab before we exit the house and head towards the hospital. After taking my blood sample to run some tests, we sit in the waiting area as we await the results.

The nurse returns with the results tucked in an envelope while Aamir signs some papers up at the desk. While he does that, I use it as an opportunity to open the results and, behold, I think my eyesight is a bit poor due to my current state of health.

The results state I'm pregnant. I look to see Aamir coming back, so I put the paper back in the envelope before standing up to meet him halfway. "Let's go." He says holding onto my hand. "What did the results say?" He asks as we sit in the car.

"Can we wait till we get home?" I ask, and he nods. Once we're inside the house, I pull out the envelope from my tiny bag and hand it over to him. He carefully brings out the paper and unfolds it before he starts reading the contents.

I stand waiting for his reaction, from a serious worried face to a confused one to a disbelieving face, and finally he smiles and says, "You're pregnant." He smiles while walking up to me, and I nod. "You're going to be a mother." He says he is placing his hand on my still-flat tummy.

"We are going to be parents." I correct him, placing mine over his. "You're such an amazing woman, Nasreen, and you're about to be an impeccable person by becoming a mother." He smiles, looking up at me, and that's when I notice the tears in his eyes.

"Are you crying?" I giggle and he nods his head in the negative before replying, "No, I am not; my eyes are just watering from happiness." He jokes, giving me a hug. "Thank you." He says this after being in the same position for almost a minute. "Thank you too." I smile.

"No, thank you for your understanding, patience, and complete trust in me from the beginning of this marriage to this point on. You're such an amazing person with an even more amazing character; you're going to be the best mother I've ever known." He says he is placing his chin on my head and inhaling deeply.

I'm glad I found him, and I'm glad he gets to be the father of my kids and the man I get to spend the rest of my life with.
