AAMIR
Algiers, Algeria.
After getting home from work, I go upstairs to rest a bit before heading to the mosque to meet up with the brothers to discuss the events happening this Ramadan. After taking a nap, I drive Aman and myself to the mosque. I stop Aman to talk about a few things when I see Naeem walking towards us.
"Assalamau alaikum, Aamir," he greets, bowing his head a bit. "Wa alaikumus salam, Akhi, how are you?" I ask him, "I'm fine, Alhamdulillah, how's everything?" I ask.
"I should go." Aman, who has been standing beside me, says, "Okay, then call me when you're ready so we can go home." I say, patting her shoulder. "Everything is fine, Alhamdulillah." He smiles.
"Congratulations, Aamir. I see you got married without telling me. I might not have been around, but you could have at least told me." He teases hitting me on the side lightly.
"What makes you think I got married?" I chuckle, holding onto his hand. "The sister who just left." He says it like it's obvious: "Auzubillah, brother, she's my sister, Aman. Have you forgotten I have a sister?" I laugh. "Hh, I'm so sorry, Aamir, I thought..." he stutters. "Don't be; you're not the first to say such." I'm still laughing.
"I just thought," he says again, trying to explain himself, "it's fine, really. What brings you to the mosque this early?" I ask as we start walking deeper into the mosque. "I just met with Sheikh Ayman outside, and he spoke to me about the Ramadan program going on and said I should meet up with you to explain things further."
"Yeah, you can join in, but the problem is that you're going to have to work individually with the kids; all the groups are filled up," I explain. "That's fine," he says.
"Let me call Aman to take you up to the brothers. I have to be at the airport to pick up my grandparents, so I can't show you around, but Aman can take you to the other brothers." I apologize for bringing out my phone to call Aman.
"Hello, Aman," I say into the phone as she picks up. "Do you need help with something?" She asks, "Yes, please." I add, "I'll be right there; give me a minute." She agrees, "Okay, I'm still standing where you left me. Thank you. She'll be here soon." I say, and he nods. "Assalamu alaikum," she says as she walks up to us. "Wa alaikumus salam," we chorus.
"Aman, please take Naeem up to meet the other brothers. I would have done it, but I need to be somewhere else," I explain. "Ok, then I'll see you later," she waves at me as I walk away.
So I leave them, trusting in Aman to take him up to meet the brothers, as I had to pick up Nana and Nanu from the airport.
As I enter the house with their luggage, I meet Aman at home. "Come on, Aamir, you didn't bother telling me they'd be coming this early," she whispered. "I'm sorry, Aman. You know how busy I've been these days. I know you two don't get along that well, but please just bear everything for me. Baba told Nana that I'd met someone and that we'd be going to see them this weekend." I plead, and she sighs, nodding, making me feel at ease.
I give her a hug and jog downstairs to say bye to them before leaving for the mosque after making sure they are well settled at home.
I meet up with the others in the mosque to wrap up everything, and after we pray Magrib before breaking our fast, We finish and pray for I'sha and Taraweeh. We bid each other farewell with promises to be here on time tomorrow, in shaa Allah.

I return home, and we sit down for some dessert that Aman made. Have I mentioned that my sister is a very good cook? Well, she is.
After she serves us dessert, we all sit down in the living room to talk a bit. "Aamir, I spoke with Nasreen's father, and they said we can come this Saturday, in shaa Allah, to discuss things further." Baba says, "Ok, Baba, I'll keep that in mind." I reply.
"Aamir, you better talk to this sister of yours. Tell her to get serious and decide on what she wants to do with her life. She can't live with her parents forever; she has to get married soon." Nanu starts again, and I sigh. Here we go again.
I hold onto Aman's hand and look back at Nanu. "I'll talk to her in shaa Allah," I say. After dessert, we all retire to our rooms.
After brushing my teeth, I head towards Aman's room to check on how she's doing. I knock on the door and wait for her reply. "Yes, come in," she yells. "Asalamu alaikum," I say, taking a seat on her ottoman. "Waalaikumus salam akhi, why aren't you asleep yet?" She questions me, as I am usually out by this time.
"Well, I just wanted to see if you're fine, you know, after what Nanu said," I say, holding onto her hand. "Oh, you know how Nanu is; it's really nothing." She tries to smile, the keyword being "tries to," but instead her lips start to tremble.
Aman has always been this way; she tries to hide a lot and dismisses a lot of issues as trivial, so sometimes I have to make sure she's really okay and not hiding her smile as she usually does.
"Don't take what she says to heart, Aman; you and I know how she can be, and it's not your fault you're not married yet; such things are beyond our control; only Allah can determine when it is the right time for such," I coo, trying to comfort her. "Don't cry, ok?" I add, and she nods, using the back of her hand to wipe away the tears that fell.
Nanu might be my grandma, but sometimes I don't really feel the need to come home and see her when she treats Aman this way.
I stand up and sit properly on her bed and give her a proper hug. "Everything will be alright, and who knows, you might even get married before me," I joke, making her giggle. "Go to sleep, Aman; I'll see you tomorrow, in shaa Allah," I say as I exit her room.
After going through my routine, I set my alarm before hitting the pillows and shutting down.
