NASREEN.
Algiers, Algeria.
The next morning, Umm and Abu sit down to wait for me just as I wake up. "What?" I ask, feigning innocence, when I notice them looking at me as I take a seat. "You know what?" Umm says, eyeing me, "What do you think of Aamir and his family?" Umm adds, "But Umm, I just woke up." I joke, and her eyes narrow in warning.
"Fine, I was just joking, okay?" I say to Umm, adjusting my hijab. "I think Aamir and his family are okay, and I have no problem or fault to bother you with." I confess.
"Can I go now?" I ask, raising my brows, "That was a very vague answer, so no, you can't go yet." Umm says, "What do you think of Aamir as an individual then?" She asks, and I sigh.
"Well, he seems okay." I mutter, "What do you mean by okay?" Abu finally speaks up: "What I mean to say is, from all indications, he is a good man whom I see myself living with." I wheeze. I don't like the fact that I'm discussing this with my parents early this morning.
"So you're saying you want to see him again to decide if you want to make your decision, or have you already made up your mind?" Abu asks. "Yes, I have made my decision already; if it is fine with Aamir too, I'd like to meet with him to get to know him and finally decide if I can settle down with him." I say.
"Mashaa Allah habibty, I'll inform Abban of your decision and see when we can set up a date for you two to meet up. It's best if everything is done early to prevent the emergence of certain feelings before the nikkah," Abu says, digging out his phone from his pocket.
"Ok, I'll be upstairs now. I have a few things I need to tidy up. Bye." I say this before practically running up the stairs back to my room. I pick up my phone to call Maryam while tidying up my room. I change my bed sheet and vacuum up my room.
Maryam picks up on the fourth ring just as I finish up my room. "Assalamu Alaikum habibty, Naeem tells me he saw our potential in law, and it turns out I know who he is; please do give the guy a chance; he really is a good man; a lot can attest to it too."
"Well, I was calling to tell you something before you cut me off." I say, "Go on, go on." She urges, "I might have already told Abu that I want to see him again to be sure of whatever my decision is going to be." I say.
"Stop joking!" She squeals, "I'm serious." I giggle, "Oh my Allah, you'd better say yes and husband him up if that's even a thing, because I can tell you that not picking him is going to be one of the biggest mistakes you're ever going to make. Except if Allah doesn't will it, of course."
I giggle at her rant, and we continue to talk until she says something about going out with her husband for groceries. I end the call and decide to take a nap before Zuhr.
After waking up, I help Umm prepare Iftar before going to sit with Abu to talk with him. I enjoy sitting down to talk with him.
He also gives the best advice. It had always been our thing since I was little. We'd go on walks around the neighbourhood, discussing silly things, and then come home to continue from where we stopped. Umm was so jealous back then, always complaining about how Abu was spoiling me too much.
Ahlan wa sahlan! Eid Mubarak, I know it's coming late but I'm just starting to find my bearing.
How are you all doing?
