I finished packing a little after midnight. I was making a check list over everything I was taking when my phone rung.
"Hey mom."
"Hey sweetie how you doing?"
"I'm fine just packing."
"Packing for what?"
"I'm going to New York for a couple of days."
"Oh how long you gonna be gone?"
"We leave wednesday and come back Sunday"
"We, whose this we sweetie, who are you going with?"
"My Friend" I mumbled hoping she would let it go
"Tell me about this friend? What's her name what does she look like?" She screamed
"I'm can't tell you."
"Why not? Is she a celebrity or something?" She teased
I didn't say anything I just held the phone to my ear and waited for her to catch the hint
"Oh, okay well you know our secrets jars think if I opened that up then maybe I could get a name?"
I had forgotten about our secret jar. We made it up so long ago. We made it up when I first decided to come out. I didn't want to tell anyone because in my community it was frowned upon. But my mom and I made up a secret jar which wasn't really a jar it actually wasn't even real. It was our code for whatever I say next doesn't leave this conversation.
"Her name is Ruby Rose." I confessed
"Aww that's a cute..... wait Ruby Rose like sexy Ruby Rose, like everyone's lust object Ruby Rose."
"So everyone know her but me?"
"You would have to live under a rock not to know her."
"I guess I live under a rock then because I had no idea who she was."
"You don't live under a rock you just live in a book, but it's okay she's yours now."
"I guess your right but I know you didn't call to talk about my love life so what's up?"
"You make me sound so heartless but your right your dad and I are going on a cruise next week we leave Sunday and we don't want to leave your brother home alone because well he's a teenage boy we were hoping he could come out there with you."
"Well I don't get back til some time Sunday but that's fine with me?"
"What time do you get back Sunday?"
"I don't know some time later the night."
"Oh well if you find out what time you get back we can try and get him a flight that arrives with you."
"Okay I'll call Ruby and ask her then get back to you."
"Okay, sweetie love you talk to you later."
"Love you too mom bye."
I felt it was to late to call her plus I was tired so I just sent her a text
'Hey I was wondering what time we would be getting back on Sunday because my mom wants to fly my brother out here so he can hang with me while there on vacation.'
She responded almost instantly
'Why do we just get him and have him fly back with us? Where is he coming from?'
'He's coming from Atlanta and no you don't have to do that.'
'I insist. You're my girlfriend now, I'll have my manager change our tickets and buy him one.'
'No, you buying my ticket is already you doing a lot. I just need to know what time we get back'
'Well, it's to late my manager just bought the tickets.'
'Nooo. Wait you don't even know his name?'
'His name is Desmond Warren and he's 17'
'How do you know that?'
'I was talking to Aliyah and Sasha while you were sleep the told me all about you.'
'I'm gonna kill them but Ruby please tell me you didn't really just do all of that.'
'Yes, I did so call and tell your mum about the arrangements and I'll see you tomorrow well later today.'
I know my mom was gonna flip when I told her but since it had been done there was nothing we could do about it. So I forced my self to call my mom
"Hey mom."
"Hey sweetie did you find out what time you're getting back?"
"Umm, about that well see Ruby kinda bought his ticket and said we would come and pick him up from the house on Sunday." I closed my eyes and waited for the screaming to begin
"Well, that was awfully nice of her asked her how much the ticket was so I can pay her back."
"She won't tell me."
"What do you mean she won't tell you?"
"She said that she was gonna pay for it."
"Madison, you know I don't like stuff like this it makes me feel like I owe people."
"I know mom but there was nothing I could do I told her not to many times but she refused to listen to me."
"You know what we'll just find out later, I'll tell your brother the change of plans, he's really missed you since you left so have me and your dad."
"I know I miss you all too its just between school and the internship and work I've been really busy."
"I know sweetie, I'm not blaming you but get you some sleep. I'll talk to you later. Love you."
"Love you too mom."
I hung up and put my phone on the charger then got comfortable in bed and tried to fall asleep but I couldn't. I was just thinking about Ruby about how she came over to my house to spend time with me, how she invited me with her to New York, how she paid for me and my brother's plane ticket, how she made me feel, just everything she had done in this brief amount of time. She really was amazing and she was mine I must be one really lucky girl
