He sat at the dinner table, the room suddenly feeling a lot smaller than he remembered it. His brother and father eyeing him closely. Silence. No one uttering a word.
"Haven't seen Amelia in a while." Alfie commented, breaking the silence after what felt like a lifetime for everyone in the room. "What is it? A month, now? I hope everything is alright with you two."
Erling felt the walls close around him, reality hitting him as he realised that he could no longer hide the truth for those close to him. Maybe it would be the closure he needed, a chance to accept that Amelia was no longer his girlfriend; some random stranger he shared history with. "She is okay. Busy. I see her throughout the week but you know what she's like. Always working." Maybe not today. Maybe he could just have her for one last night, even if it's not physical. Live the idea that at the end of the week, she would be back next to him, her head on his chest, as she mindlessly scrolled through her phone to show him something she had previously seen that reminded her of him.
His father nodded. "Well, send her our best. It would be good to see her soon, have dinner with her."
Just for one more night, in his mind, Amelia was his and she never left.
