A brand new day in Chicago and Olivia was at work. Truck 81 pulled back into the station around 7pm. They had been out for the last 3 hours on back to back calls.
"Nice work guys. Get something to eat before getting some rest." Casey told his team as they unloaded from the truck. Olivia pulled out her phone from her pocket once she was out of her turnouts. She wanted to check if Travis had left her a message as she had missed a call from him when they were heading out to that last call. That was a few hours ago and she hadn't had the chance to check her phone since. Olivia walked slowly towards the common room as she looked down at her phone. She saw the missed calls she had from not only Travis but Warren and Gibson as well. Seeing this made her stomach sink. She clicked on the voicemail Travis had left to hear what he had to say.
"Hey Liv, I errm, I didn't really want to do this over a voicemail but you're obviously on shift. It's errm, it's Pruitt. He, he died. Call me please. I love you and I'm sorry you found out like this." Olivia froze dead in her tracks. The second Travis had started speaking she could tell that something was wrong. As the message had gone on, her heart shattered. Pruitt Herrera had been like a father figure to Liv and in the blink of an eye, he was gone.
"You alright Liv?" Casey asked as he stopped next to her just through the double doors.
"Err, no. Not really." She said close to tears.
"Pruitt Herrera just died." She added, her voice cracking as the words left her mouth.
"I err, I have to call Travis." She announced, walking off towards the locker rooms before Casey, or anyone around them that had also heard what she had just said, had a chance to say anything to her. As soon as the call connected, Olivia broke down.
"Travis..." She whispered, wiping her eyes.
"I'm sorry Liv." Typical Travis. Even at a time like this he was putting his friend before himself.
"What the hell happened? Was it the cancer?" Olivia asked, wanting to know what had happened. The last she knew his cancer was back and he was dying but he was meant to have a lot more time.
"No, it wasn't the cancer." Travis said first. Olivia heard him take a second to compose himself.
"There was a fire at a storage facility. We were all inside the building. They were struggling to vent it and err, we all started losing visibility and we were all running out of air." Travis started to explain. Olivia slowly started to piece together possible scenarios based on the information she had been given so far.
"He heard it over the radio and drove down to the scene. Maya couldn't stop him, Liv. He went up to the roof and vented it..." It was then that it hit Olivia what had happened. Pruitt Herrera had died saving his team, his family.
"Is everyone alright? Was anyone hurt?" Olivia finally managed to ask after both herself and Travis had sat there in silence for a few minutes, taking everything in.
"We're all okay." Travis croaked.
"Good. Look I'll, errm, I'll be out as soon as I can okay? I need to speak to my chief but I'll be there as soon as I can." Olivia didn't hesitate to say. Even though she didn't live there anymore, they were still her family and right now, they were all hurting. They needed each other now more than ever. The first thing Liv did was go take a minute to cry and then compass herself. She was in shock. She went to find Casey.
"Casey." She called out his name, waving him over to her as she remained in the hallway.
"I have to go to Seattle." She told him straight away, even though she knew he knew that already.
"Of course." He nodded.
"Is there anything I can do?" He asked his friend.
"No, but thank you. I'm going to clear it with Boden, are you okay if I clear off now?" She asked her Captain.
"Of course, we'll manage." He nodded.
"Thanks." She smiled weakly before she turned around on her heels and headed towards Boden's office. As soon as she had cleared it with Boden, Liv had grabbed her stuff from her locker before leaving. She decided to head to the district, desperate to see her husband right now.Walking into the district, Liv walked up to the front desk.
"Olivia, nice to see you. What can I do for you?" Sergeant Platt asked the familiar face.
"Are they in? I really need to see Antonio." Olivia told Platt.
"They've just got back." Trudy nodded.
"Is everything okay?" She asked quietly.
"Not really." Olivia said, trying to keep it together.
"I'll buzz you up." Platt nodded as she patted Olivia's hand, which was resting on the front desk, supportively.
"Thank you." Olivia smiled weakly as she walked off towards the gate. She pulled the gate open and headed upstairs after Platt buzzed it open. Walking up the stairs, she turned the corner and saw everyone sitting at their desks. A smile grew on Antonio's face when he saw his wife walking up the stairs.
"Hey honey." He smiled as she stood up from his desk.
"What's wrong?" He asked his wife, being able to tell straight away that something was up. Olivia gave him the 'not here' look. He took her hand in his and led her through to the breakroom, closing the door behind them.
"Pruitt Herrera died." OIivia burst out crying. Antonio instantly moved to pull his wife in for a tight hug.
"I'm so sorry." He whispered, kissing the top of her head.
"Travis called me and I missed it. I listened to the message when I got back to the firehouse. He-he's gone." Olivia sobbed. She angrily wiped her eyes. She hated crying like this.
"I told him I'd been on the first flight out. It's a firefighter funeral so it will be in a couple days. These things come together quickly and he had already started planning it because of the cancer." Antonio explained to her husband.
"So it wasn't the cancer that killed him?" Antonio asked his wife, not letting go of her hand. Olivia shook her head and explained to him what had happened.
"I'll speak to Voight. I'll take a couple days of leave." He told his wife.
"You don't have to."
"Hey, I'm not letting you do this by yourself. I'm gonna be with you every step of the way." He told her, lifting her chin up so she was looking at him, before he kissed her. Olivia nodded and hugged him again. She sat down on one of the chairs as Antonio went to speak to Voight. A few minutes later, Antonio walked back into the brake room with his jacket on.
"All sorted, let's go." He told his wife, holding out his hand for her. Olivia stood up and slipped her hand into his before they walked out together.
"Sorry for your loss Olivia." Voight told her as he caught them leaving.
"Thanks." She said quietly. Antonio squeezed her hand supportively as they walked out together. Olivia slipped on her sunglasses, which she had hanging from her shirt, as they walked down the stairs.
"Thanks for your help Sarge." She called over to Platt on their way out. She knew that Mouch would let her know what had happened so they didn't stop to talk to her. They drove home separately in their own cars before reuniting outside the house.
