Walking back into the firehouse brought some comfort to Liv. It had been an exhausting few days back in Seattle. Between Pruitt's funeral and her short time visiting station 19, the emotions had been sky high for everyone. Quickly stashing her bag away in her locker, Olivia went to grab a cup of coffee. She had only gotten back late yesterday afternoon but she didn't want to miss another shift, especially when she knew working was the best thing for her right now. She was grieving the loss of Pruitt Herrera but knew firefighting would bring some comfort to her as it's what Pruitt taught her to do.
"Morning guys." Olivia greeted everyone in the common room as she strolled over the coffee machine.
"Good to have you back Liv." Herrmann smiled widely.
"Good to be back." Liv plastered a smile on her face.
"How was it?" He asked Olivia quietly now he was standing next to her.
"Awful...but at the same time beautiful. Massive turnout." Olivia explained before she took a sip of her coffee.
"I wish I could've stayed longer but at the same time, I wanted to be back here ya know? 19 are hurting and as much as I love being around them, I don't think it would have helped me to be there." Olivia added sadly. Herrmann nodded, understanding what she meant.
"He sounded like a great guy."
"He was." Olivia nodded, wiping a stray tear that fell. Herrmann pulled her in for a hug, rubbing her back supportively.
Arriving on scene, Olivia pulled on her sunglasses as it was surprisingly sunny outside, as they unloaded from the rig. Straight away they could see their vic hanging precariously from some ropes from the roof. It was hard to tell whether he was conscious or not.
"What happened?" Olivia asked the police officer on scene who looked like he was talking to someone who worked at the building.
"Window cleaner. This is his buddy, Mark. Said Jared tripped over his ropes and fell over the edge. Had no response from him since it happened." The officer explained.
"Did Jared hit the window at all when he fell?" Olivia asked the other worker, Mark.
"I heard him thud against the window pretty hard." Mark nodded.
"Was he connected to any lines?" Olivia asked the important question.
"Not yet. He was hooking up when he tripped. I think he's just caught in the lines and not attached." Mark said, obviously concerned.
"I didn't want to go down myself as I didn't want to risk disturbing any of the ropes." He added.
"You did the right thing." Olivia reassured him
"Give us a second to make a plan of action." Olivia told them both before she walked off.
"He's not actually attached to any lines, he's just tangled. He could fall any second." Olivia told Casey and the others.
"I can't tell if he's conscious or not." Olivia told Casey as she looked up at their vic.
"Being unconscious isn't a bad thing right now." Casey stated, knowing it meant the guy was still and not moving. Casey got straight onto the radio to see how far out Squad 3 were as they had also been assigned to the job but truck 81 were the first on scene.
"Severide, how far out are you guys?" Casey asked over the radio as Olivia assessed the situation from below.
"About 5 minutes. We got redirected around lurke street by PD." Severide replied, clearly annoyed. Casey looked at Olivia.
"He doesn't have 5 minutes." Olivia shook her head, referring to their victim who was currently hanging precariously from his ropes over the side of the building.
"Our vic doesn't have 5 minutes. Truck 81 is gonna have to handle this one themselves." Casey declared over the radio.
"Copy that."
"Fuller, harness up. You and I are going down to the vic. Kidd, Gallo, grab the rope and rescue packs. Mouch, you're in charge of blocking off the street." Casey ordered as he walked over the truck to grab a harness for himself.
"Copy that Captain." Mouch nodded and went to work clearing any pedestrians from the street as everyone else got to work.Liv was the first one over the edge, slowly descending down. She stopped when she noticed their vic was waking up. He started panicking and screaming out in pain.
"Hey, hey! Look at me, look at me." She called down to him as Casey started coming down as well.
"Hey, Jared, look at me!" Olivia shouted again.
"We're going to help you but I need you to stay still okay? If you move you're gonna fall!" Olivia shouted down to him.
"Just hang tight, we're coming to help you." Casey told him. Jared got the message and stayed as still as he could. As they got down to him, Casey began to assess the rope situation as Olivia spoke to Jared.
"My name's Olivia and this is Casey alright? We're going to help you." Olivia reassured him.
"I'm going to clip this line to your harness, okay? So you won't fall." Olivia explained calmly. She got to work and clipped the safety line to Jared's harness before Casey started cutting him free from the other line. After a couple of minutes, he was ready to be lowered down.
"Okay guys, take us down slowly!" Olivia shouted up to the others. She supported Jared as Casey lowered himself down next to them ready to help if need be. On the way down, Olivia noticed Jared was passing out.
"Hey Jared, you alright? Hey, you with me?" She asked, shaking him.
"Brett! He's lost consciousness." Liv called out as she kept his head upright whilst the others lowered them down to the ground. As they reached the floor, Liv supported his head as they others supported his body weight.
"Did he hit his head?" Olivia asked the other worker as they lowered him to the floor.
"I don't know...maybe." He shrugged.
"Get him unhooked." Olivia instructed as she started unclipping the rope lines from them both before she pulled off her harness.
"His pulse is rapid." Sylvie stated as they hooked him up to the monitor.
"Breathing is shallow."
"Pupils are sluggish...potential bleed." Olivia observed.
"Let's get in a line, get him on some O2 and get him to med." Sylvie instructed.
"I'll grab the collar and board." Olivia said as she got up and headed for the ambulance.
"Is he going to be alright?" The other worker asked.
"Looks like your friend may have hit his head when he fell. The medics are doing everything they can for him." Casey tried to reassure him as he pulled him out of the way. The others helped the medics get the patient onto the gurney before they loaded him into the ambulance. Truck 81 stood back as the ambulance pulled away, headed for med as quickly as possible.
"Damn that was hectic." Liv stated as she pulled her sunglasses back on and started helping the others put the gear away.
"Nice work Liv." Casey patted her on the back.
"I just hope he's alright. Head injuries are scary, people just crash." She sighed. Everyone agreed.
"Load up, we'll refuel on the way back." Casey instructed his team.
The next morning, and it was finally the end of shift.
"Hey, I forgot to say, we got an update from med during our last drop off. That patient of yours, Jared, they operated and he's going to make a full recovery." Heidi told Liv as she caught up to Liv as she walked out of the firehouse.
"Good, that's good." She said relieved.
"Me and Chase are gonna grab some breakfast with Severide and Kidd if you want to join us." Heidi offered as Chase joined them and slipped his hand comfortably into Heidi's.
"Err, rain check? Antonio's got the day off so I just want to go home and spend the day with him." Liv told them.
"Sure, we'll go another time." Heidi nodded. They said their goodbyes and headed off in their separate ways. As soon as she was in her car, Liv pulled on her sunglasses before she dialled Antonio's number.
"Good morning, gorgeous." Antonio greeted her as soon as the line connected. Olivia couldn't help but smile.
"Morning." She grinned.
"I just got off. I'm headed home now but I was thinking I'd stop and grab us some breakfast, are you hungry?" She asked her husband.
"Sounds good."
"Great. I'll swing past that café we like and grab some stuff so I'll be home in like 30-ish minutes." She said as she turned on the engine. She checked around her before she pulled out and headed off down the street.
"I love you."
"Love you too, see you in a bit." Olivia told him before they hung up.————————————————————
