Sequel to Memories. A few weeks after their wedding, Olivia and Antonio return to normality from their honeymoon. Both jumping straight back into work, will they adjust to the post-honey phase? Will things continue to run smoothly or will their hect...
A week later and it was the early hours. It had been a fairly busy week and with two floaters in the house, the atmosphere just hasn't been the same. Both Chase and Heidi had managed to snag a week of furlough at the same time. Heidi had gone to visit some family whilst Chase had gone away for a few days to visit his sister and nephew who live in Florida. Because they had both been off at the same time, Ambulance 67 had been covered by two floaters. It was early and Oliva was at home in bed with Antonio.
Tuesday, 4:56am Olivia groaned as she rolled over to escape the loud ringing of the mobile phone. "Urggh, turn it off!" She groaned, nudging Antonio who had also stirred. "It's not mine." He said, after shifting to check his phone. Normally if a phone rang this early, it was his. "Oh." She mumbled as she quickly rolled over to grab her phone. She squinted to try and see who was calling as her eyes tried to adjust to the blaring light of the screen. "Hello?" She answered, laying back as she answered the phone without knowing who it was. "Yes this is she." She quickly sat upright, now suddenly more awake. Antonio reached over and switched on the bedside light before he sat up as well. "What's going on?" He whispered. Olivia raised her hand out, signaling to wait a minute. "Oh my god, okay alright, yeah, I'll be there as soon as I can." She said before hanging up. "What's wrong?" Antonio asked his wife, rubbing her back. "It's Chase, he was in a car accident on the way back to town. He was airlifted to Chicago Med a few hours ago from a different hospital." Olivia explained as she ran her hands over her face. "I forgot that after everything with Riley and with his sister not living in Chicago, I'm his emergency contact." She explained as she got out of bed. "I have to get to Med." She said, grabbing some random clothes from the draws next to her. "I'll drive." Antonio said, also getting out of bed to put on some clothes. After she pulled on some leggings, a top and her CFD hoodie, Olivia sat down to put on her trainers. Once she was ready she sent a text to both Casey and Severide to call her as soon as they could. The last thing she wanted to do was wake them up as well.
Arriving at the hospital, Olivia hopped out of the car and practically ran inside as Antonio went to park. Before she had a chance to speak to the receptionist, Connor Rhodes spotted Olivia. "Olivia." He got her attention as he walked over to her. "Are you treating Chase?" She asked Connor. "I am." He nodded. "How is he? How bad is it?" Olivia asked him. "Firstly, he's stable. We have him sedated and intubated." Connor explained first, calming her down slightly. "He was airlifted in from a small trauma unit on the outskirts of Chicago. He was sedated for the flight due to his head injury. He is currently in the ICU. He had a collapsed lung so we had to put in a chest drain which seems to be working well." Connor continued to explain. Just then Antonio joined them. He instinctively took Olivia's hand in his and gave it a squeeze. "He's had a CT scan which revealed a couple of things. First, he snapped both his tibia and fibula so he'll need surgery to fix that. The scan also showed swelling in his brain so he's being monitored closely. Dr Abrams is going to examine him. He might need to put in an ICP bolt to monitor the pressure." Connor explained. Olivia ran her hand over her face as she took this all in. "Will they need to operate?" Olivia asked. "Potentially. If the pressure increases or he starts bleeding then yes. Otherwise we can watch and wait." Connor explained. "But he'll be okay though right? These are all things that can be treated?" Olivia asked hopefully. "Things are a little up in the air right now but he's stable and he's here with us so we'll take good care of him." Connor tried to reassure. "I can take you up to him." He added, placing his hand on her arm supportively. "Please." Olivia nodded, trying to keep herself together. "Shit, I need to tell Heidi." It suddenly clicked in Olivia's head. Chase and Heidi had been going out for a few months now and it was public information to everyone at 51. "I'll call her and Boden once I've seen him." Olivia added, wanting nothing more than to see Chase with her own eyes right about now. Connor took them up to the ICU and showed them to Chase's room. Olivia paused briefly in the doorway as she took everything in. Chase was hooked up to a lot of machines. He looked so...fragile. "I'm being paged to the ED but I'll be back up to check on him soon." Connor told her. "Thanks Connor." Olivia smiled weakly as he left. She went and sat down in one of the chairs near Chase's bed. Antonio stood behind her. "W-wow." She breathed shakily. "You're gonna be alright Chase, ya hear me? You're gonna pull through this." She whispered, squeezing his hand. Antonio squeezed her shoulders supportively.
Wednesday, 2pm Later the following day, Olivia was still at the hospital. Besides leaving briefly to freshen up and change her clothes, she had stayed at Chase's bedside while Heidi was away. She was working on getting back to town as soon as possible but was having trouble getting an earlier flight. Boden had given Liv the shift off so that Chase wasn't by himself and it meant she could keep everyone updated whilst he wasn't really allowed visitors. Given the circumstances, they were letting Olivia stay with him. Chase had just gotten back from another scan and Dr Abrams was with him. The scan had revealed the swelling in Chase's head was getting worse so Dr Abrams was currently placing an ICP (Intracranial Pressure) bolt into Chase's head. "So this measures the pressure internally?" Olivia asked Dr Abrams as he worked at putting the ICP bolt in. "Exactly. It gives us a more accurate reading of the pressure caused by the swelling. If it rises above a certain level, we'll need to relieve the pressure with surgery." Sam explained, continuing his work. "What's the normal pressure? Sorry, I don't remember anything about my head injury treatment." Olivia asked again. Even though she had been through all of this herself a few years ago, she didn't know much about it all. "Normal pressure is between 10 to 15. His is currently 20. If it goes above 25 and stays above 25, we'll need to operate." Dr Abrams explained as he finished up. "Right." "He's borderline right now but if the meds we're giving him do their job, he'll avoid surgery." Dr Abrams added as he cleared away his supplies. "Thank you." Olivia nodded and turned back to the monitors as Dr Abrams left and a nurse came in to do some observations. She sent a message to Boden to update 51 and she also messaged Antonio. He was at work but planned to stop by and bring Olivia some food later on.
To be continued...
