All of the hope left Darcy's body in one long exhale.

No.

Liam jumped up immediately and stalked over to Scott. "What do you mean no?" He demanded right in the alpha's face.

Despite Liam's tone, Scott hardly reacted, only saying in reply, "Liam, look at her. She's too weak. It will kill her. We don't even know what the mercury's doing to her. We don't even know if it is actually mercury. This can't be the only way to save her life."

Darcy looked at Hayden, her pale face pinched in pain. The image made her heart ache and her breathing speed up. She couldn't help but wonder if that's how she'd go out: dying a slow painful death from mercury poisoning.

"It saved mine," Liam replied to Scott.

"You know that was different. You were hanging off a ledge."

The beta stepped closer, his voice breaking slightly as he said "You promised."

The anger and frustration rolling off Liam were thick in the air, and even if it weren't, if he were blocking it from her, she'd still be able to tell what he was feeling. His fingers were curled into tight fists, and his feet shifted from side to side like he almost couldn't contain himself. The desperate look on his face spoke as loudly as his voice did when he yelled at Scott, "You said you'd do everything you could!"

The beta had never been great at keeping his emotions under check, and anyone who looked at him knew he was struggling right now to see the person he probably trusted most in the world refuse to help the girl he'd fallen in love with.

"Which is why I'm not going to do something I think is going to kill her," Scott responded. He took a sharp inhale and stepped back. "There has to be..." His next breath came out as a wheeze. Darcy straightened off the cabinet, worry racing through her as Scott struggled to breathe. He tried to finish his sentence, "There has to..."

"Scott."

From beside Darcy, Theo reached into his pocket and took out an inhaler. Without hesitating, he threw it at Scott who caught it, shook it, and then took a hit. The relief was immediate and evident on the alpha's face. Able to breathe normally again, Scott explained, "There's another way to save her."

Darcy almost let out a breath of relief at his comment. That was the Scott she knew, the one who tried to think of solutions and saw them through. Not whoever had said maybe Hayden wouldn't heal, who gave up when things got to be too much.

A ragged breath from Hayden drew their attention back to her.

"Guys, I don't know what the statistics are for surviving a werewolf bite, but she's definitely not surviving this. We need to do something," Theo urged.

Darcy looked at Scott. "What about Melissa? Do you think she'd be able to help?"

"Yeah, I'll call her," he replied then stepped away to go talk to his mom.
