Darcy thought it was unfair to ask her to focus on school out of everything going on in her life. Chimeras, Dread Doctors, the book, her surfaced memory- a lot was going on and World History wasn't exactly thrilling enough to take her mind off it all.
After struggling through the second half of the book last night into the early morning, she'd finally finished it. So now, she waited for the other shoe to drop, her own suppressed memory to come to the surface. Luckily or unluckily, it hadn't happened yet. Meanwhile, Scott and Lydia had both already had their own- the former's had happened after his biology class had finished, and the latter's had occured in her mom's office.
They had been led to believe by Dr. Valack that their memories would consist of something related to the Dread Doctors, but both of their memories hadn't even been close. Lydia had remembered seeing her grandma in a bathtub at Eichen House after the woman had drilled a hole in her head, while Scott had remembered being in the hospital having a terrible asthma attack after getting in between a dog fight, which had triggered a real asthma attack.
Their experiences were making Darcy less and less thrilled about her impending memory, and she had thought she was already the least excited she could be.
Sitting in the back of Mrs. Gansey's classroom, she jumped slightly in her seat as the school bell rang. She blinked a few times and drug herself out of the deep pit of the pack's problems and into the real world. Sighing, she started to gather her things and stuff them into her backpack. With all of it put away, she fell in line with the rest of the class and filtered out of the room.
As she entered the bustling hallway, she noticed a strange crackling in the air. She stepped sideways and out of the way to not block people coming or going. She trained her hearing toward the strange noise. It wasn't close but further away and beneath her, maybe. The basement?
Darcy looked around to see if anyone else had noticed it. Right as she did, the lights flickered, and the crackling grew into an intense buzzing. Electricity, she recognized. Something was wrong with the school's wiring. If she lived anywhere else, it probably would've been nothing, but since she was in Beacon Hills, she decided to check it out.
She pushed against the flow of people, heading for the closest door to the basement. Students weren't technically allowed down there, but she'd been down plenty of times anyway.
Following her hearing, she made her way through the basement hallways. It was far from quiet, with the roar of machinery and the hum of electricity around her. As the buzzing grew noticeably louder after a right turn, two heartbeats joined in the noise. Darcy's heart skipped and she slowed her gait cautiously. It could've been a chimera or a Dread Doctor luring her down there.
She tensed her hands at her sides, the shift held just beneath her skin, and waited for whoever it was to round the corner to her left. A moment later, she sighed in relief at the sight of Scott and Theo appearing from behind the concrete wall.
