A scream broke Darcy out of her stupor, the heat in her cheeks making way for cold terror dripping down her spine. The blood-curdling scream sent shivers across her skin- it had been pure fear, pure terror that pierced the air.

She spun on her heel, gaze falling on the hordes of people suddenly emerging from between the school buildings. Their frantic faces came into view as she ran toward them.

Usually going against the flow of the crowd drew weird looks. This time, however, everyone was so concerned with running away from whatever had scared them that they didn't pay any attention to Darcy. She pushed against the flow, trying to reach the school's doors.

Darcy made it inside just in time to see someone thrown down the steps further along in the hallway. She raced toward them, recognizing the number on the red jersey before she saw his face.

"Scott!" she called out and shortened the distance between them.

He turned to her, relief filling his features before it fell into disappointment. "Where have you been?" He asked her, furious as he led her up the stairs he'd just been thrown down.

Darcy fumbled for a lie, knowing the truth would be no better. "I got caught up, my aunt-"

He shot her a look and then the anger faded away. "You're here now, that's what matters, except the Beast is here, too. I've been trying to keep it away from everyone else, but they all went to the school after it appeared on the lacrosse field."

They took a sharp right turn, ending up in one of the main hallways. A girl stood there, facing the doors that led outside. Darcy could hear the Beast's growling just on the other side. Scott shuffled the girl away into the classroom nearest them and Darcy followed, closing the door behind them.

She and Scott braced themselves against the door, staring down at the girl lying on the floor in front of them. It was at that moment that Darcy noticed the blood streaming from Scott's face. She wanted to ask if he was okay but figured this wasn't the best time.

They waited, hoping it would walk past them. Their hopes were suddenly crushed as the something large pounded on the door.

"Go. Go out the window!" Scott yelled at the girl on the floor. "Go!"

She scrambled off the floor and then ran. For some reason, she hesitated right at the window. The two werewolves yelled at her to go, and she finally pushed herself over the windowsill into the safety of the night.

The Beast banged on the door again, shattering the window at the top. Shards of glass fell onto their heads, and they cowered for cover even though there was none. A beat of hesitance filled the air before wood splintered and two monstrous hands grabbed Darcy and Scott by the shoulders.

The Beast pulled them forcefully through the remainder of the door and into the opposing wall of the hallway. Darcy screamed at the pain in her shoulder, the skin torn to ragged strips. Scott wasn't doing any better, and the two of them panted on the floor.
