BIBLE POV
I led Jeff toward the waterfall, hoping he would love the view as much as I did.
My father once told me that when you meet your soulmate and the connection begins to form, you start to share the same "view." It’s an instinctual ability designed to help us protect one another. We can find our soulmate anywhere, even without a GPS. We aren't fully connected yet because we haven't established a deep relationship, but I’ve dreamed about him so many times—always bringing him here, to this exact spot. Now that I finally had the chance in the real world, I couldn't wait to see his reaction.
...
We reached the clearing where the water tumbled down the rocks.
"I hope you like it," I said, watching him.
"I do... but..." Jeff trailed off, his brow furrowed.
"But what, Jeff?"
"This waterfall... and this big rock. They look so familiar."
"Have you been here before? It's quite hard to find this place without a local or me to guide you. It’s private property, not open to the public."
"I think... I think I've seen it in my dreams."
"In your dreams?" I asked, playing along.
"Yeah. I’ve dreamed about it so many times. It's always night. I’m walking along a path, and then I stop right here at this waterfall."
"Wow. What else do you see in these dreams?"
"You’ll laugh at me if I tell you," he said, looking a bit shy. "Every time I dream of this place, there’s a massive wolf with blue rings in its eyes. I know we're in Thailand and there are no wolves in the jungle here, so it's just my imagination."
"I’m not laughing," I said seriously. "It’s just a dream, right?"
"Yeah. Just a dream. But it feels so real."
We sat together on the large, flat rock. Jeff stared at the falling water, lost in thought.
"Ben, you know... I usually have such a hard time sleeping. I try to stay busy, working on my songs in the studio or working out, but I still toss and turn. But for the last two weeks, these dreams have felt so peaceful. I fall asleep without even noticing, and when I wake up, my chronic headaches are gone."
"That’s good for you, Jeff. But tell me... if you saw that wolf from your dream in real life, would you be afraid? Would you run?"
"Emm... I don't know. If it wasn't as friendly as it is in my dreams, I’d probably be eaten alive."
"If the wolf is friendly in your dreams," I said softly, "I’m sure it would be friendly in real life, too."
"Haha, maybe. We never know."
...
"Ben... Ben! He’s dreaming about me," Fenrir’s voice rumbled with excitement. "But you haven't imprinted on him yet. How is he seeing me?"
"I don't know," I whispered internally. "I dream of him, but he only dreams of you, Fenrir."
"Ben? I didn't catch that. The waterfall is a bit loud," Jeff said, leaning closer.
"Oh, sorry! Just talking to myself," I laughed nervously.
"It’s so relaxing here. I once went camping in Chiang Mai, and I miss having time to myself away from the city."
"You can come here whenever you want, Jeff."
"Really? I’m afraid my schedule is too packed until the end of next month."
"That’s okay. Even at night, you're welcome. I love swimming here under the stars."
After an hour of sitting in the peaceful mist, a man I recognized from the village approached us. It was Mee Phan.
"Evening, Mr. Wichapas. Sorry to disturb you, but I have a message."
"Evening, Mee Phan. Don't worry, this is my friend. What's the news?"
"The Village Chief told me he saw suspicious men near the western edge of the forest. They had a lorry full of wooden boxes."
"When were they spotted?"
"This morning."
"Okay. Wait for me at the house; I’ll come to you in a moment."
Jeff looked at me, his eyes full of questions.
"Jeff, let’s get back to the house."
We hurried back along the stone path. Once inside, I turned to him.
"Jeff, can you wait for me here? I need to check on something. I want to make sure no one is doing anything illegal on this land. You can go up to my room if you want to rest. I won't be long, I promise."
"Okay. I’ll wait. Just... please hurry back, okay?"
I reached out, squeezing his shoulder and giving him a reassuring smile. He looked so adorable with that look of concern on his face.
"Thank you, Jeff. Wait for me."
I spent hours with Mee Phan surveying the western woods. We found footprints and deep tire tracks—definitely from a heavy lorry, just as the Chief had said. By the time I made it back to the house, it was already dark.
"Jeff?" I called out, but there was no answer.
I walked into the living room and found him fast asleep on the sofa. He looked so peaceful, his shirt riding up just enough to show a bit of his stomach. I couldn't bring myself to wake him. Slowly, I slid my arms under his body and carried him upstairs to my bedroom.
I laid him gently on the bed. His hair had fallen across his eyes, and I used my fingers to brush it back.
"I wish I could kiss you," I whispered. "I hope that soon, I'll be able to truly hold you."
I watched him sleep for a moment before heading down to the kitchen. He’d be hungry when he woke up. I quickly whipped up some sweet and sour chicken and fresh rice. I sat down to wait, turning on Man Suang on Netflix to pass the time.
I got so caught up in the movie that I didn't realize how much time had passed. Jeff was still sound asleep upstairs. Suddenly, my phone buzzed with a message from Mee Phan. He was back at the site. I wrote a quick note and left it on the table next to the food.
“Mee Phan needs me. Eat first, I’ll be back soon.”
I dashed out into the night, my wolf instincts heightening in the dark. I met Mee Phan behind a thicket of bushes.
"What's the situation?"
"I saw a pickup with three men. They’re just standing there, waiting for something."
We crouched low. Through the leaves, I saw the men. They had guns tucked into their waistbands. This was more than just illegal logging.
"Mr. Wichapas, a small lorry is coming. Look."
Two men jumped out of the lorry and began unloading the wooden boxes. They cracked one open, and my blood ran cold.
"Mee Phan... those are weapons."
I focused my hearing, catching snippets of their conversation. My mind raced. Three years ago, my family had to fight to save this forest from developers. I wouldn't let these criminals bring violence into our home. Not while Jeff was here. Not on my watch.
