BIBLE POV
I drove my Jeep toward home. My house is tucked away on the outskirts of Bangkok, far from the noise of the city and the local community. It sits right at the edge of the jungle. My father built this large cabin and gave it to me before he moved back to his hometown, taking my mother and older brother with him.
Looking at me, you might not realize I’m mixed; my features are very Asian. But my father is Native American, originally from a small town in North America. He was a traveler, a writer, and a businessman who came to Thailand and fell in love with my mother, a doctor at Bangkok General Hospital. They married and settled here, where my father bought land near the forest to build our home.
Three years ago, my father had to return to his roots because my grandfather fell ill. He needed to manage the family estate, so he took my mother and my brother, Jo, with him. I chose to stay behind. I felt my life was here in Thailand—but there was another reason, a deeper story, behind that choice.
"I didn't realize it was a full moon tonight," I murmured.
"We need to get back. Hurry, or we’ll miss the run."
I arrived at the gate—a high, solid wall built for total privacy. After parking the Jeep, the automatic lights flickered on as I walked into the hall. I tossed my bag on the table and ran to my bedroom to change.
"Are you excited tonight, Ben?" Fenrir asked.
"I love the full moon," I replied.
"Do you want me to take over?"
"Not tonight, Fenrir. I want to run myself."
I stripped down to my jersey shorts and ran barefoot into the jungle. The cool wind felt incredible against my skin. I stopped at a large rock near the waterfall and discarded my shorts.
"Fenrir, you can change now."
I pressed both hands into the earth and felt the familiar, violent cracking of my bones. I transformed into a massive wolf—thick grey and black fur, with sky-blue eyes circled by rings of gold.
"Ah, so refreshing. I want to swim," Fenrir said once the transformation was complete.
To understand Fenrir, you have to understand the real me. I am Bible Wichapas Sumettikul-Midhunter. Sumettikul is my mother’s name; Midhunter is my father’s. My dad is a descendant of the Silver River Tribe.
It was a secret my father kept from me until my eighteenth birthday. Before then, I thought werewolves and vampires only existed in movies like Twilight or Teen Wolf. My childhood was normal until I hit fifteen. That’s when the voices started. Every full moon, weird things happened: my eyes would change color, or my hair would grow inches overnight only to shrink back the next morning.
I started dreaming of running through the woods and sitting by a waterfall with a massive wolf—the same wolf every time. Sometimes I’d wake up in the jungle or on the grass outside the house, completely confused. My parents always acted like it was normal.
Then, on my eighteenth birthday, they sat me down.
"Ben, my baby," my mom started. "I have to tell you something, and I hope you can accept it just as I did when I married your father."
"I know you hear the voices, Ben," my dad added. "I know about the eyes, and waking up in the dirt. You aren't crazy. Your mother is human, but I am not. Our family is different."
"What do you mean, Dad?"
"It's easier if I show you. Let’s go outside."
My dad led us out back, followed by my mom and Jo. He pulled off his shirt and trousers, standing naked in the moonlight. He leaned forward, hands touching the grass, and in seconds, a massive black wolf stood where my father had been.
"Whoa... Dad? A wolf?!"
"Let your father explain," my mom said gently. Jo stayed silent, his hand steady on my shoulder.
The wolf shifted back into my father. "It’s a hereditary bloodline. I’m a werewolf, and your brother became one after his eighteenth birthday, too. Jo, show him."
Suddenly, I felt a thick, furry presence behind me.
"That’s your brother," my dad said. I reached out to touch the wolf’s fur; he stayed perfectly still under my hand.
"I’m sorry we told you so late. You’ll be changing soon. Ready or not, it’s part of you. Has your wolf told you his name yet?"
"Fenrir," I whispered. "He told me he is Fenrir."
"That is your wolf spirit. He is part of you now. Treat him well, Ben. He can sense danger long before you can. Listen to him."
Back in the present, I shifted back into my human form and pulled my shorts on, sitting on the cool rock by the waterfall. The moon was blindingly bright.
"Ben, I’m happy today," Fenrir’s voice echoed. "We met our mate. He is so beautiful, and he smells divine."
"But he’s a man, Fenrir."
"Soulmates aren't chosen by gender. It is destiny."
"He’s a normal human. We don't even know if he could love us."
"Trust the power of love, Ben. Like your parents. If you meet a mate from our own species, the connection is instant. But with a human, we must be careful. If a mate rejects the bond after a connection is made... it’s like death. The suffering is unbearable."
"We’ll try our best," I sighed. "Let's go back. Sunrise is coming, and I have a photoshoot this afternoon. I need sleep."
As I walked back, I thought about why I stayed behind when my family left. My father told me, "Ben, you must stay. This land needs you. I don't want this place to suffer or be taken by the wrong people."
My father had become the protector of this jungle years ago. He had befriended the local villagers, and their shaman had sensed right away that my father wasn't "normal," but that he wasn't evil either.
When illegal loggers and corrupt developers tried to steal the villagers' land and threatened them with death, my father stepped in. He haunted them in the night—a massive wolf with glowing red eyes. He didn't kill them, but he scared them so badly they believed the jungle was cursed and haunted. They never came back.
My mother found out the truth during a bloodbath. The loggers had kidnapped several women from the village, including her. My father’s friend called him to help. He saved them all, but he was shot in the process. He collapsed in the jungle, shifting from a wolf back into a man right in front of her. She was shocked, but she didn't run. She stayed to save his life.
That was the man I was named after. A protector. A hunter. And now, I had found my mate.
