"So it's my turn for date night and I know exactly what I want to do," May declares over the phone. She is just getting off shift and Emelia can hear her keys jingle as she walks to her vehicle.
"Oh do you know? That's a first," Emelia teases, fidgeting with her pencil. She knew Eddie would give her trouble for calling while she was doing homework but she was planning to get away with it as long as she could.
"You better shut it or I won't tell you until Thursday," she threatens with no real heat.
"Fine, what do you have in mind?"
"I'm going apartment hunting and I want you to come along."
Emelia has to do a double take and make sure she isn't dreaming. Her amazing, beautiful and out of high school girlfriend wanted her to come apartment hunting with her.
"Really?" She asks softly, May can almost feel the anxiety through the phone.
"Yeah, I'll pick up at 1?"
"Um yeah, it's a date." Emelia says before handing up. She stares at her phone for a long moment after.
Apartment hunting. She could do that.
—
Maybe she couldn't.
The pair arrived at the first place and Emelia clung to May's hand.
It was cute, small. A good start place.
"And you will be roommates?" The landlord asks, Emelia having not paid attention to the first part of this conversation finally tunes in.
"It's just for me, I just brought her along for the ride." She bumps her hip and Emelia nods in agreement.
The woman gives them a moment alone in the place, and Emelia turns to face her.
"You're freaking out," May says.
"Am not," Emelia defends herself too fast, earning a pointed look from May. "Okay maybe a little. It's just, this is kinda crazy don't you think. Apartment hunting. I haven't even graduated and you're apartment hunting. How does that even work?"
"It works because I love you." May says simply.
"And that's enough for you?" Emelia asks sadly. May shakes her head with a sad look, sometimes she just wanted to shake Emelia until she could see she wouldn't just run at the first sign of trouble.
"Always." May says, kissing her quickly before any other stupid remark could be said. "Want to know why I brought you along."
Emelia nods her head in response.
"Because one day, whenever you're ready I want to live with you. And until then I want you over here as much as possible. You may not be on the lease but it will be our space." May says, Emelia looks up at her with those big brown eyes. And she melts.
"You are amazing May Grant." Emelia says, wrapping her arms around her neck and trapping her there for the moment.
"And you, Emelia Diaz, are even amazinger." May says back, eliciting a giggle.
"That's not even a real word." Emelia challenges.
"Just shut up and kiss me." May shakes her head before closing the distance.
They look at two more apartments before calling it a day. Choosing to end their night at a restaurant.
"Thanks for coming with me today," May starts after they order. With the quietness of the restaurant it felt like it was just them.
"Thanks for inviting me," Emelia says. "Hey I know what our next date can be?"
"Oh yeah what's that?"
"Decorating 101." Emelia responds. "But Eddie was also wondering if you wanted to come over for dinner sometime. With Ana."
"Okay," May sits up a little straighter and gives her girlfriend a worried look. "I mean I would love to but that's a big step for you. Are you ready for that?"
Emelia shrugs her shoulders. "Honestly I don't know if I will ever be ready to let Ana in but I figured I could try. Buck will be there too and maybe Carla if she's back but I really want you to be there."
"Of course I will but is Eddie cooking?" May asks teasingly.
"Oh god no. Buck would never forgive me. I'm spending the day with Abuela and she is going to teach me how to cook Chilaquiles."
"I love it when you speak Spanish." May nearly melts into the table. Emelia places her elbows on the table and leans in.
"¿Quieres besarte en la parte trasera de mi camioneta hasta el toque de queda?." She says with a smirk.
"I have no clue what you said but yes," without another word. Emelia grabs May's hand and they head for the door.
Emelia loves this feeling, the race in her heart as they fumble with their buckles. Giggling freely until Emelia finally put the truck in drive.
They go out to their spot, the sun is just about to set but Emelia doesn't care. All she can look at is the girl sitting next to her.
She quickly pressed her lips to May, kissing her like it was the last day on earth. May just melts, sinking into her seat as Emelia nearly climbs over the center console to get her closer.
May ends up pulling away with a smile that has Emelia squirming, she nudges her head to the back seat and Emelia has zero complaints.
"Hey," May says once they're both comfortable. Now sitting side by side but facing one another.
"Hey," Emelia responds, leaning in once again. She cups her face and pulls May in close to kiss her. May easily follows, bringing her hands to rest on her waist. She balls up the fabric in her fist as she kisses her harder.
"I don't, just so you know. I'm not.." Emelia pulls away when the car seems to be getting warmer the longer they're pressed together.
"I know," May says in between kisses. "I'm happy to just... how did you put it?"
"Beso en la parte trasera de mi camión?" Emelia says with a smirk.
"Yes," May sighs contently. "That."
