"Hey!" Yaoyorozu comes running to you on the way home from school, so you get a big smile and turn to her.
"Momo!" You hug her immediately. "What's up?" The two of you fall into stride and link arms.
"As much as I want to say that I just wanted to say hi, t have a favor to ask" She gives a sheepish smile so you chuckle whole shaking your head.
"Typical rich girl. Only has friends when she wants something. I'm hurt." Dramatically, you put your hand over your heart, which makes Yaoyorozu laugh.
"Sorry."
"Anyway, what's the favor?"
"I have a friend from class and his grades are awful. He's looking for a tutor and he asked me but I can't. I've been so busy and I've been trying to find time in my schedule but it's packed. I mean, unless I cut out my three hours of sleep."
"Say no more, I've got it. I'll turn him into a straight-A student. Trust me I've got this."
"You're sure? You can refuse if you don't want to. I won't make you-"
"I got it. Trust me. I mean, how hard can tutoring be?"
Laughing nervously, she replies, "I wish I could say it's easy, but.. Kaminari..he learns at a very slow pace! Yes! That's the right phrase!"
"Pfft.I got this, Momo. It can't be that hard."
"Please, don't overestimate his abilities that don't really exist."
"He can't be that bad."
"I'm Denki Kaminari," the blonde boy says, butting his hand out for a shake.
"Y/n L/n", you shake his hand and sit down. "Sit. Now. Work."
"Okay. Okay. A serious girl." He sits beside you, resting his chin in his palm. "So, pretty lady, did it hurt when you fell from heaven?"
Raising your eyebrow, you look at him and ask, "Are you calling me Satan?"
"No I meant to call you an angel. See, it's a pickup line and-"
"I know. And I still stand by what I said. Satan is a fallen angel. Kicked out of heaven."
"Well that's not what I meant."
Looking back to the textbook, you reply, "Then you should've specified. If you're going to flirt, use logic behind it. You sound like an idiot."
"Flirting doesn't need logic. So long as it makes a girl blush, then it doesn't matter."
You snort, "Why would I blush from an illogical comment?"
"Yaomomo made you sound so much nicer when she talked about you."
"Yaomomo is a literal angel who can love even a troll like me, so that doesn't say much."
"You're not a troll. Trolls aren't pretty."
"I know, and neither am I. Now shut up and get to work-"
"Did you just say you're not pretty?"
"Yeah, and?"
Nodding, he points his pencil at you with a girl. "I see where you're going with this. You're not pretty. You're sexy."
Rolling your eyes, you shove a book at him. "Shut up already. You're here for tutoring and that's it. Now let's go."
"You're such a killjoy. How can I focus when I'm all alone in a room with a pretty girl? You're being unfair."
"And I also don't care. Study. Now. I'm only doing this for Momo. So shut up and stop wasting my time."
"Fine. I'II study. Thank you, gorgeous."
"Don't thank me. Again. This is only for for Momo. I'd do anything for her."
"Fair enough."
As you try to teach him, you find him even denser than you expected. When Yaoyorozu said he learned slowly, you didn't think it'd be this bad. How dumb can you be? Finally, you drop the book and start massaging your temples.
"You okay?" he asks, blinking innocently.
"No. I'm baffled by your idiocy."
"Heheh. Everyone has their strengths and weaknesses."
"Except you, who appears to have only weaknesses. What are you actually good at?"
"Being a hero?"
Sighing, you drop your head onto the desk face first. "At least you're good at something I can't teach. It'd suck if you needed tutoring there, too. I couldn't help you with that."
"I'm sure you'd figure it all out."
You shake your head. "I'm not like Momo. Hero stuff is awful for me. I don't have the natural mind to do good. Momo would rush in to save someone without even thinking about her life, but me? No. I'm a coward. I get scared because.. truth is... protecting others isn't my priority. I'm selfish, okay?"
"That doesn't make you selfish. A lot of people are like that." For once, he sounds serious. "Hero work, that's not for everyone. It's actually really hard. You can't like living, to be honest. You're supposed to rush into action no matter, even if it means dying. And most days, it does. And you know what? I don't wanna die."
"Then why do that to yourself?"
"Because I wanna save people. I wanna use the quirk that I was born with to do good in the world."
"What's your quirk, anyway?"
"Electrification. I discharge large amounts of electricity." He scratches his face awkwardly. "It's just that my body can't handle it right now. For a few minutes, my brain is totally fried and...I'm a complete moron."
"Why'd you use it before walking in here then? You shouldn't act like a moron while studying-"
"It's worse when I use my quirk, thank you very much."
"It can get worse?"
"Yes, it can."
"So, you're like a living battery that doesn't run out of juice, right?"
"I mean, that's one way to put it." You shove a cord in his mouth.
"Here, give this machine some juice. I can't seem to get the right wattage for it. Please?"
He looks into your eyes, then nods silently. You see yellowing electricity encases his body and the machine's battery maxes out. In awe, you stare at it a few moments, then back at him, who's face is blank as he gives a thumbs up and goes "Woohoo!" You cover your mouth and giggle. Its cute.
You ruffle his hair, knowing he won't remember anyway. "This is cute. I'm jealous of you. After all my brain it's so perfect. It comprehends everything, even when I don't want it to. If I don't want to remember, I have to. I wish I could be dumb. Nobody would expect anything great and.. and I could study with my friends normally, and learn with them. This could be.. us figuring it out together, little-by-little. Hehe.. it'd be more fun...could I even like you? We could be friends.
But you'd get tired of me. Only Momo can like me. I'm hopeless."
After a few moments, he goes back to normal. "What happened?"
"You got even dumber. I didn't know that was possible."
"I told you."
"You're pathetic. Let's wrap it up for the day. My patience is thin." You stand up and start gathering your things
"What's your number?"
"Pfft. Like I'd tell you."
"I need it for tutoring. It's easier than having Yaomomo as the middle-man, yeah?"
"Fine. I'll give you number. But don't text me for anything but studying, got it? And you're to answer me within five minutes if I happen to text you first. Understood?"
"Yes, Ma'am."
You write your number on a piece of paper and hand it to him. "Here. Don't loose it, okay? And you'd better not hand it out to anyone, either."
"I won't. Thanks."
"Uh-huh. Now get lost"
He leaves and you start walking home as well. As you take each step, you think of Yaoyorozu. Why does she hang out with you, anyway? You're not pretty or rich, just a brain, which she also has. What does she gain? You're not even fun. That's when a little chuckle slips through your cold lips.
"Only Momo could love a soul like mine."
You're tutoring Kaminari again, and you swear he gets dumber by the day. His flirting doesn't stop, either. He's quite keen on it. Still, you ignore it, not really caring. However, after a couple weeks, it stops. That has you laughing inwardly. You knew it. It was just a game, and he's done with it.
Now that the flirting has stopped, he's more serious. He focuses better, and he's actually learning. Actually, he's isn't so bad now that he isn't being so stupid. Quite likeable. It gets to the point that you look forward to teaching him, so on your way there, there's a bounce in your step and a smile on your face.
You tell Yaoyorozu all about the tutoring lessons and about Kaminari, and she'll nod and smile. It makes you so happy to talk about him, though you don't know why. He just does. He's like a big ball of sunshine.
"So," Kaminari says as he opens a book. "What's on the agenda today, Teacher?"
"Math."
He purses a lip. "Ew."
"Yes, I know. You don't like it. Honestly, it's not my favorite subject either. But you're gonna do it whether you like it or not so shut up."
"Fine, Ms. Bossy Pants."
Smiling a bit, you reply, "I'm sorry."
"Are you smiling?" He stares in awe.
"Maybe a bit." You shrug. "Why?"
"I've never seen you smile before."
"Oh... whatever."
"It's pretty."
"Not the flirting crap again. Knock it off."
"I'm not flirting. I'm giving my honest opinion. There's a difference."
"I'm not arguing with you, Kaminari. But I'm leaving it at this, we're both aware that I'm not pretty and-"
"And you're lying! Again! Liar! LLLLLLLLLIIIIIIIEEEEEEEEESSSSSSSSSS!.!! CAUGHT IN A LIEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE!!!!!"
"Shut up! It's true!"
"How dumb do you think I am? I know. I'm not smart. But I'm not blind, too. I can see that you're the prettiest girl ever, okay? So stop lying to my face like that."
For some strange reason, heat rushes to your cheeks. Perplexed by this, you touch them and feel the searing heat of them. Why? What is this? Tilting his head to the side, Kaminari presses the back of his hand to your right cheek, which somehow makes them even hotter.
"Are you... blushing?"
"Blushing...? I've never blushed before... I don't even know."
"Well, look at that. You're all flustered now. And to think. You kept saying you didn't like it when I complimented you." He pinches your cheek which has you glaring.
"Cut it out."
"But you're so cute!"
"Stop avoiding math."
"I'm not. You're just cute."
"You know what else is cute? Boys who do their math."
With the most serious expression you've ever seen on him, he says, I'll do math every day if it means you'll compliment me and call me cute."
"Then get to work. We'll see when you're done."
"Yes, Ma'am!"
He works hard, though still struggles. Knowing that he's actually trying, you can tolerate it a bit. He's not that bad. He's actually quite nice. Likeable indeed. When finished, you give him a smile and ruffle his hair.
"Good boy. You're free to go home."
"How about we go out and get ice cream instead?"
"No, thanks. I'll see you tomorrow for tutoring."
"Okay. See you tomorrow."
And tomorrow was your last tutoring session.
"Kaminari's grades have shot up so much," Yaoyorozu tells you. "He gets straight A's now."
"Does he still need tutoring?"
"I don't think so. I mean, he's paying more attention in class and is learning a lot better."
"Okay. Then it's done. I can finally get home at a decent time."
"Yeah. I'm sure Kaminari will be happy."
"I know I am."
But that wasn't true at all.
Ever since you've stopped tutoring Kaminari, you've missed him more than you can express. He was so fun and goofy and lighthearted and dumb and cute and everything that could ever make you smile. And now you don't have him. It actually hurts. But what is this pain? You've never felt it before.
"Is this... what it's like to miss someone?"
"Yaomomo," Kaminari grabs Yaoyorozu's hands. "I need you. Desperately. I- I don't know what to do!"
"What is it?"
"L/n. I don't know how to officially ask her out. I mean, I've tried suggesting things and it doesn't work! It goes straight over her head! I need your help!"
"Oh. Yeah. Y/nn is a bit dense. She doesn't pick up on these things well."
"Can you help me? Please?"
"I'd be honored to! You guys would be such a cute couple!" She clasps her hands. "Y/nn, being in love. That would be amazing to see. Yes. I'll help you."
"Thank you! Thank you! Thank you! Thank you!"
"Of course! You could buy her a diamond necklace and take her out to a beautiful restaurant with a fountain and-"
"My wallet wouldn't survive that."
"Oh. What can you afford?"
"A gift from Walmart and, like, fast food for lunch."
"Oh, my gosh. Are you poor? Kaminari, why didn't you tell me? I could've helped you! Are you eating okay? Do you even have a home? Are you-"
"I'm not poor! Just not rich!"
"But my parents told me only the poor shop at Walmart. The poor and wretched."
"I mean the wretched, yes. But not just the poor."
"Oh... well then let's take you there and shop for her! I can't wait!"
"Pardon?" You raise an eyebrow. Kaminari holds out a little teddy bear, smiling.
"Will you go out on a date with me. For real. No more flirty jokes. I mean it. I love you and-"
"NO."
"What?"
"I don't want to. I won't date. Books > boys. I don't have time."
"Not... even... a chance?"
"NO. Not even a chance. Now get lost, dummy. If you wanna keep up good grades, study."
"B-b-but...I went and-"
"I don't care. Now go. I thought we could've been friends, but you just ruined that. Sheesh."
"I get it. Friends... and you only thought... I never had a chance to begin with....that's fine....I'll.. see you later, then. Sorry. You were always right. I'm a dummy. I shouldn't have bothered."
He walks away, so you start on your way home, not knowing why your heart raced when he confessed to you. It was strange and you don't want to remember it nor relive it. The blonde is quite troublesome. He makes you feel things that you're unfamiliar with and has you thinking thoughts you don't want to. This was for the best. Cutting ties takes care of that, doesn't it? Yes. Its over now. Entirely.
"Why did you reject Kaminari?" asks Yaoyorozu. You sit in her dorm room, today being a sleepover you two set up.
"Because I don't wanna date an idiot."
"But I thought you liked him."
"What gave you that idea?"
"Well, you're always talking about him and you get happy before seeing him and-"
"That doesn't mean I like him. It just means I don't dislike him."
"That's not true. You like him I know you better than anyone else and I can tell that you're in love with him."
"Love? I don't even know how to do that. The only person I care about is you."
"And I care about you, too. Which is why I need you to see that you're in love. You may not see it, but I do."
"To be in love sounds like torture. I don't want to."
"That doesn't matter. You need to go tell him. He's been really sad and down and he won't eat and he hasn't slept and we're all worried sick. You have feelings for him, so stop hurting him! You may not realize it, but you mean more to him than you know."
"He should've known better than to fall for me. That was his mistake."
"When did you get so cold-hearted?"
"Oh, Momo. I've always been this way. You're the only one that can make me wanna be kind."
"That's not true. I saw how you were with Kaminari. The way you smiled and laughed. l even heard you giggle. Or when he short-circuited and the look in your eyes said it all."
"That...I just... envy him sometimes... I want his brain."
"Do you? I'm pretty sure you just want him."
"Do I?"
"You do. I'd know better than anyone."
"Why would I love an idiot like him? I already know he's out of my league-"
You cover your mouth. From where did this idea come from? Him? Better than you? But he is. He's handsome, he's kind, he's good. He's everything that you wish you could be. So why would you allow yourself to love that? It'd break your heart.
But don't you already know how he feels about you? He loves you. So it's okay to love him. You can have him. You would already if you hadn't been so stupid. Why did you do that? Rejecting him was the worst thing you've ever done. And now he's hurting because of you. Is he crying right now? Thinking about your cruel rejection? You stand up.
"I do love him," you whisper, but then you say more firmly. "I do love him. Momo, where's his dorm room?"
"Go down the hall. Third door on the right."
Without another word, you run out and try to find the room. Right in front of the door she told you about, his name is plastered on a sign. Not thinking of common courtesy, you barge in and find him sleeping with tears sticking to his cheeks. You don't think. You just run to his sleeping form and pull him into a hug, waking him up entirely.
"What-"
You slam your lips onto his, which surprises him You're kissing him now? Is this you teasing him? Your way of making him even more miserable after rejection? So that he'll never forget you? You seem that heartless. Angry, he pushes you away, but you don't let him. Instead, you pin him to the floor, holding him down and sitting on his back.
"I'm gonna say this once" you say. "And only once. So you'd better listen up, dummy. I love you, okay? And yeah. I know. I rejected you. At the time, I didn't understand myself. I thought that I didn't. I thought that a dummy like you would never worm his way into my heart. But I was wrong, okay? I love you. And from what I've heard, you're not over me. So you'd better confirm it."
"Er-I-"
'It's a 'yes' or 'no' question."
"Yes."
"Then I'm your girlfriend. There." You get off of him and sit as he tries to to collect himself. "And I heard that you haven't been eating? When was your last meal?"
"I had lunch the day you rejected me-"
"YOU IDIOT!!!" You grab him by the collar. "You're coming with me. Let's go get something for you to eat."
With a big grin, he asks, "Like a date?"
"Don't get your sparky butt all excited. Now let's go, dummy."
"Yes, Ma'am!"
