Chapter 23 - Déjà vu much

Raindrops pattered on the windows, creating a regular beat of water against glass. They dripped and slipped down slowly, mixing in their fall. The skies were a murky, depressing grey from the clouds, imposing that mood on the others.

You slid off the kitchen stool, placing down your dishes in the sink, clattering. Nobody was awake yet, you had needed some alone time away from the Avengers to work out.

Once in the gym, you hopped onto a treadmill and turned it on to a high setting. After barely a minute to adjust to the speed, your breathing steadied and all your body moved in a regular pattern. Music flowed through your earbuds into your ear, conjuring another world for you. Half an hour later, you moved to the punching bags, wrapping your fists and sliding on the gloves. One punch after another, one jab after another, you attacked the bag roughly and dodged it when it swung. You lost track of time, the only indicator being the songs going through your earbuds. Carefully, you dived back into your memories at HYDRA, in an attempt to exteriorise them. Every insult, every hit, every injection, every experimentation, you reinflicted upon yourself then the bag. Your punches became stronger and faster, increasing with each hit until finally, sand ran out of the bag. You heaved and exhaled loudly, wiping off the sweat from your brow. Steve would have to bring a new one. Your last activity would be traget practice. Setting up the moving targets at the highest setting, you filled your barell and started aiming. You groaned at the first few misses until you got the hang of it, confidently shooting at each and every one till none remained.

The tower was still silent when you left the gym, the rain probably not only dampening the ground. After showering and disposing of your sweaty sports attire, you settled comfortably on your bed and opened your laptop, continuing your online law classes. After you were brought back to the Avengers, Tony had made you get back up to date with schoolwork and signed you up for whatever studies you wanted. Last year, you had completed a chemistry course and immediately signed up for law at Harvard afterwards. It was fun to now be able to go up to your teammates and exaggerate whatever they were doing into a massive crime. But then again, you were a part of the Avengers, some of the measures were inevitably not always law abiding.

Your phone tinted and you picked it up to look at the notification. Between a newsletter from a fashion brand and a random tag in an Instagram post, there was a text from Tony.

Tin can: Meet me in my lab in five. I know you're awake.

You: Stalker SOS.

Tin can: JARVIS does tell me when someone breaks something at the tower. It's usually Steve who bursts the punching bags though.

You: Don't worry about it ᕙ(⇀‸↼‶)ᕗ

Tin can: 🙄

You chuckled and slid your phone in the pockets of your trousers, slipping on some shoes before going to meet Tony in his lab. By now, all the Avengers had risen, mostly scowls and frowns on their morning faces; downing gallons of coffee. The clouds were still spewing liters of rain down on the city below; their grey shapes clogging up the sky. You slipped inside a lift and pressed the button, heading down to Tony's lab. After passing the several layers of security, you stepped in.

"Hey Tones." you greet the genius busy sketching away, modifying certain aspects on the paper. He scanned it through a machine leading to it being projected in 3D over his table.

"What's up Pixie? Blueberry?" he called out, shaking the packet of fruits he was munching on whilst working.

"Nothing much." you answer, grabbing a fistful and shoving them in your mouth. Tony gave you a side eye and you just shrugged playfully.
