Dia de los Muertos: Malise
"Oh, a match." I read from the book with my godson on my lap.
"It might afford her a world of comfort." Milo reads.
"If only she dared to strike one."
"It was a bright and wondrous flame, like a candle, and she carefully warmed her hands over it. It was..."
"A wonderful light." He smiles.
"Yes, it was." I grin back and softly kiss his cheek a few times, making him giggle.
"Uncle Mac!" He gets off my lap and I look up.
"Hey!" Mac picks him up and they hug. "Hey, buddy. How you doing?"
"Aunt Lina says I'm getting better at reading. I just read another story."
"Wow. That's great."
"I'm going to write them soon. I have a lot of ideas."
"That's good. I can't wait to read every single one of them." He sets him down.
"You want to talk to my aunt Lina alone?"
"Yes, please."
"Okay. But no funny business." Milo takes his book from me. "Can we read this again tonight, aunt Lina? It's my favorite story."
"It's my favorite too. Of course." I kiss his forehead and he heads inside.
"Nice shirt." Mac looks at my Silence of The Lambs shirt.
"Thank you." I get up.
"He's gotten so big."
I nod. "Yeah. Yeah, he has." I lean my hand on the railing and push some hair behind my ear. "So what's up?"
"Just wanted to check in. See how you're feeling." He looks at my shoulder.
"It's been two weeks, Mac. I'm fine."
"Wasn't just talking about that."
"Okay, I'll bite just this once. What are you talking about?" I shake my head in confusion.
"The fact you cut off your oxygen supply and blacked out in Evan's arms."
"I did the same thing you would've done. Evan and the others too." I cross my arms. "How are things with you and your dad?"
"They're okay. We're making progress, I think."
"Good." I nod, fixing my bracelet.
"I was just-"
"I know what you were trying to do, alright? And I appreciate it. But it's between me and him, not you. Okay? So, stay out of it, Angus." I raise my eyebrows.
