"You wanna raise my son?"
"Anything to get him away from you. You can come after me all you want, just leave Mac and the rest of my family alone. Forever."
"You're welcome." Desi's voice goes through me as I stare out the window.
"Oh, thanks." I turn and look at the drink in front of me.
"Hey." Riley sits next to Desi who's across from me.
"Hi."
"So what's going on?"
"Nothing, why?" I furrow my eyebrows.
"You're dissociating."
"What?"
"That dissociation technique you've mastered over the years where you refuse to think back on all the things that transpired recently." She raises her eyebrows.
"Can't I just enjoy the view? In peace?" I get up and head to a seat in the back.
"Nuh-uh." She turns me around. "What is it?"
"What? What are you talking about?"
"Ever since...I don't even know, for the past two and a half years, maybe, you've got this look in your eye. Like...Like you've accepted it. All of it. Like you're fine with...with being doomed or something. I can see it. I can feel it. I can see it in you. Whether you're with Mac or not. I can see it in your eyes, Amanda. What the hell is going on? Is it the Initiative? Have they somehow contacted you from their padded cells? Is it about Roman, because you never really talked about the trauma from that. I mean, you were held hostage and tortured for two weeks and you just got right back to work."
"Why does that surprise you? I've been held hostage before." I turn.
"That's not what I mean and you know it." She turns me back around. "Is it Jack? Is your dad? Is it Mac's dad? Is it Takeda? Hell, is it Helman? What is it? Who's been making you feel like this for almost three years? What the hell could you have possibly done?"
"I could tell you nothing and no one and you wouldn't believe me, so what's the point?" I walk past her.
"Everything." She blocks me.
"Get out of my way."
"No."
"Get out of my way, Riley." I whisper while nodding.
"Not until you tell me what the fuck is going on." She clenches her jaw.
"You done now?"
"If you're trying to make me hate you, it's not working. It's not. It won't ever work. Ever."
