Yeonah and Gumi were sitting at the dinner table with their mother Areum that evening, and the atmosphere was noticeably tense. The long wait for Sooji, who had not yet come home, made Areum nervous. Punctuality was particularly important to her mother and she had high expectations of her daughters.
The dining table was lovingly set, with plates, cutlery and napkins in perfect order. A delicious aroma rose from the steaming bowls and plates, filled with traditional Korean dishes that Areum had prepared. Nevertheless, none of those present could really enjoy the meal, as their mother's mood was weighing on everyone. Gumi knew that Sooji was still on a date with Kai, but she couldn't possibly reveal that. Especially since Areum didn't know that the stepsisters had a plan.
Yeonah and Gumi kept glancing at each other worriedly, while Areum stared nervously at her watch, wondering where her daughter was.
The silence at the dining table was awkward and no one dared to broach the subject.
When they had finally finished eating, the two sisters immediately went back to Yeonah's room. It was almost unbearable to sit under the scrutinizing eyes of their mother, who seemed to know where Sooji was.
"Sooji has a date," Gumi whispered immediately as they pushed the door shut behind them. It was a fact she had wanted to tell Yeonah before.
Yeonah's eyes widened in surprise, which looked a little funny on her pretty face, because not only did her eyes widen, but her nostrils did as well. "What, our Sooji? With whom?" as a big sister, she naturally wanted to know immediately and grabbed Gumi by the upper arms.
Gumi hissed to signal that they should be quieter and replied, "With Taehyun's manager. Don't worry, he's not fifty, he's our age and I think he's really interested in her."
The way his tone had sounded and his smile had beamed.
"Really?" Yeonah replied more quietly, only her gaze had turned skeptical. Which was no surprise, as the eldest of the sisters was not quite so fond of relationships. Nevertheless, she always tried to help the girls. "I hope he's serious. Sooji is very introverted and would take it far too much to heart if he dumped her after all. What's this manager's name?"
"Huening Kai," Gumi replied, taking Yeonah by the hand and sitting down on the bed with her. She pressed her lips together and brushed one of her red strands behind her ear. She knew Yeonah was suspicious of men and she hadn't even told her about the kiss. "I think he's okay. She was happy, I'm sure. Besides, it's the first time anyone's ever asked her out."
Yeonah hummed thoughtfully and she would be really happy for her little sister. But she still had one doubt.
"If Sooji also understood it as an invitation to a date. After all, she's not very bright in the head when it comes to interpersonal matters. Did that Huening Kai really bring it up as a date?" asked Yeonah, but she shook her hand afterwards as if she didn't really want to know. "Anyway, Sooji's not home yet and mom's insanely annoyed."
