The Life I Dreamt Of

One day I'll plant a tree
On the hill behind my house
I'll learn to dance
And wear a pretty dress or blouse
I'll sit under my tree
And watch the branches sway
I'll listen to the distant music
And smile at the bird's play
Once in a while I'll fall asleep
And dream only of happy little sheep
I'll ride my horse around my great pasture green
And we'll only stop running when we find a ravine
We stay and cool off for a while
But of course it's right on back
Because before I begin to work, I'll need a snack
I eat something light, then I sit down
I review my notes, and jot ideas on a brown little notebook
My green one is just for rhymes
Through my kitchen stained glass the warm sunlight shines
Light rain begins to fall
I only just notice the night's sweet call
I stretch and yawn
Call the dogs in from the front lawn
I make us all dinner
And swat the cats away from my prawn
I bathe, and make my way to my bed
The house is full of empty rooms,
Content and open to what may lie ahead
I pat each pet and pet each belly
They all look at me expectantly, they're all so jelly
I tuck myself in and turn on my music
I reflect on my day, and fall asleep quick
In my dreams I solve problems
And help those who need it most
I dance under my tree
And count my happy little sheep
I wake the next morning
I smile while I finally learn how to make tea
And I wish I could go back and tell myself
I have the life I dreamt of
When I was 13
