This is an old idea that I remembered because I started watching the new live action, Avatar: The Last Air Bender, Netflix series.
This is pretty much a modern era Avatar in the COTE world. The four bending elements, chi blocking and maybe some spirits will be in the world. No four nations. It's planet Earth with benders mixed among all countries. Maybe some families or clans have a higher chance of producing benders of specific elements? In the modern era, I can see most people having at least one ancestor from each bending style. So, while the Horikita is predominantly a family that produces fire benders among those born as benders, a black sheep or anomaly like Suzune can be born as a water bender because of rare and recessive genes. I'm not saying should be the back story of Suzune and her family, it's just an example and an idea.
No Avatar. No mastering all four elements. If there was one, it would probably be Kiyo with his MC luck. I just can't see the Avatar living in our world, even if benders are normal here like in the Avatar series. They would constantly be assassinated or kidnapped by foreign nations so their enemies can't brainwash them or raise them as a human weapon.
Kiyo is still born and raised in the WR.
Students are trained in the martial arts of the four bending styles and chi blocking, regardless of if they're benders or not. Just because someone is an earth bender, doesn't mean they shouldn't be able to flow around enemies and attacks like an air/water bender. Chi blocking is also not limited to non benders.
What I see as some student's elements being
Ryuuen-Fire or Earth
Albert-Earth
Ichinose-Water or Air
Mako-Water
Kanzaki-Fire
Sudo-Fire
Manabu-Fire or Water; can also use Lightning if a fire bender.
Suzune-Fire or Water; cant use lightning if a fire bender. Thinks this is one of the reasons for her brother's disappointment.
Haruka-Water
Yagami-Air or Earth
Kushida-Earth
Ichika-Earth
Nagumo-Earth
Ayanokoji-Air or Earth
I'm leaning towards Air for Ayanokoji. Just for the flight ability. I can see him being able to float and fly like Zaheer. We could also use this ability as a benchmark for Kiyo gaining attachment or learning emotions. If he has no attachments, he's light and can float. If he's attached, he is grounded. That's how I see it anyway.
Yagami would have the same bending as Ayanokoji, minus the flight if an Air bender. This would fuel his rage for having his bending compared to Ayanokoji's. If they were both Earth benders, Ayanokoji would be a Lava Bender and Yagami would be a Metal Bender.
