(This is the idea I mentioned in the previous chapter that I deleted. I will do my best to go based on memory.)

Lelouch and CC, as Code Bearers, have lived through the Golden Age, the Collapse and the Present. Throughout the Golden Age, they made many identities so they could join different research projects and colonization/expeditions of different planets. During these expeditions they would make bunkers and hideouts for later uses.
After the Collapse, they travel with a pair of Ghosts, either as Guardians or not.
As Guardians:
-The Ghosts can make living people into Guardians as well. (Don't believe is true. Meh.)
-Lelouch and CC shoot themselves in the head to see if the Ghosts can revive them as Guardians faster than the Codes can. (I always saw it as them being dead from lethal wounds like bullets to the head before they revive after their Code finishes healing them first. This is why Lelouch thought CC was truly dead when he first saw her shot. She was dead until the bullet wound was repaired.)
As Non-Guardians:
-They travel with a pair of Ghosts while searching for worthy corpses to revive as Guardians. The Ghosts just help them in a similar way that they do to Guardians.
