"morning sleepy head" Alex said, I looked at him confused as he was just staring at me again, I rub my eyes and ask "uh isn't Alby showing me around?" Alex thought for a moment then glanced at Minho who was standing a few meters away with his arms crossed and I just noticed as he looked like he was waiting for Alex to finish talking "I just decided to wake you up first newbie" Alex responded, I look at Alex then Minho who was staring daggers at Alex as if he was trying to understand what Alex was doing, "come on we need to get going" Minho grunted, he glances as me and he looked a little concerned as he turned and started to walk towards the maze, the two of them then ran into the maze without looking back, as I watched them disappear I notice Alby and Newt walking towards me, Newt opens the cage and he says "hey greenie looking forward for today?" I look up at him"I guess" I answered honestly, "follow us" Alby said as he started to lead me around the camp.
"this is the kitchen, and those two cabins are mine and Newt" Alby says as Newt turn to me as we walk past their cabins and newt added "we get them because Alby is the leader and I am second in command, and all the keepers also get their own hut" I nodded as I wondered if I will have to share a room with someone, Alby continues the tour "there is the plants where we get out food from, there is the place where we treat people with injuries and over there is where some animals are kept, and that is really it" Alby said as he turned to me, "come on lets go and get some breakfast" I followed him and Newt to a outside seating area and as Frypan gave us all some food, I quietly spoke up "so what role will I get?" Newt and Alby look at each other, "Well It depends on what you want to do, I mean for starters you don't really have the muscle to be a builder" Newt said then Alby spoke up trying to explain everything to me "well you get runners, you have met Alex, Minho,Dan and ben so far, they explore the maze and try to find a way out, Alex is the keeper, Gally is the keeper of builders, Frypan the only cook so you have met is the keeper for cooks, the slicer looks after the animals the keeper of that I believe is Winston, the med-jack is like the doctors and the keeper is clint" Newt scoffed when Alby mentioned clint, me and Alby both look at Newt confused at his reaction, "what, he cant save someone from a bloody twisted ankle, the only reason he is the keeper is because there is no one else" Newts said honestly.
Alby sighed almost as if he agreed then he asked "well newbie, any idea of what role you want to do?" I thought for a moment if it was really a med-jack I wanted to do, "med-jack, I think I will give it a try" Newt looks as Alby waiting for Alby's reaction "very well but you will have to try and learn to do a good job, we have some books in the library" I nod, "yeah I will read them", Newt then mutters to Alby but I overhear "I like her better thank clint I mean she is actually going to read those books". after that Alby leaves to do organise something, me and newt chatted, I was mainly just asking him questions about the gladers then I asked him, "ok newt, who is the scariest person here?" Newt was thinking for a moment, "hands down Alex" I looked at him confused, "he seems nice, he spoke to me a few times" Newt looked at me surprised "yeah, I mean Alex can be nice but he has an anger about him, like when he loses it.. he loses it you know.." me and Newt moved on from that conversation and we spoke for around another 20 minutes, "right" Newt sighs as he stands up "I have to get to work, you can head to the library and start doing some research for being a med-jack, I mean hopefully better than clint" I laugh a little "ok Newt see you around" I stood up as well and we went out separate ways.
once I reached the library I realise there was not many books, I pick up a book on anatomy and started to read it, after a while it got a little darker then someone entered the library, I just continue to read, "hey shank" Minho said as I looked up at him, last time he spoke to me was when he stopped me from running into the maze and basically saved my life, "hey Minho, I didn't get to thank you for stopping me from entering the maze" Minho smiles a little "its fine, how are you settling in?" he says as he glances at the book I am reading.
"yeah its fine here, just reading this book, uhm i was thinking about being a med-jack" Minho laughs a little, in the same way Newt laughed when clint the keeper of med-jack was brough up "I mean at least you are looking into how to help someone" I am starting to think that clint is not very good at his job so I ask "Newt was saying clint was not very good, is he the only med-jack?" Minho responds "yeah and Newt is right, hopefully you will do better "as he says, this I smile a little "anyway, I am here because I was suppose to tell you that there is a welcoming party for you and it is just getting started if you want to come now", I nod and put the book down then I follow Minho as he takes me to the party, "so how long have you been in the glade?" I asked, "I think round about 2 years, just over I think" I look at him in amazement "that's a while" i mutter.
"you get use to it eventually, did you get shown where you are sleeping tonight?" he asked me, then I realised Alby must of forgot to show me, "no not yet" I said, Minho nodded as he took a right "I will just show you now as it is on the way" once we pass a house with loads of hammocks Minho walked in and I followed him, he pointed to and empty hammock "this should be yours, chuck sleeps on the one to your right, Frypan will be on your left and I am beside Frypan, it is fine if you forget I can keep you right, all the hammocks look identical anyway" Minho said as we left and went to a bonfire as I see the others partying already, Frypan approaches Minho "here is dinner" he hands Minho some food and leave, "how come you have not had dinner yet?" I asked as I had already received mine a few hours ago, "I was in the maze with Alex, we have to have dinner after".
me and Minho make small talk until we hear someone shout loudly so everyone could here "look its the newbie that beat up gally" a few others laugh, then I see gally look as embarrassed as I did but gally quickly became angry and defensive "come on that is only because I didn't see it coming, if it was a fair fight I would easily win" a crowed then formed around gally and me, Minho tried to interrupt "come on guys she is new" Minho said, a weird surge of confidence rushed over me and I looked at gally.
gally must of noticed I didn't look scared as he then suggested "why don't we have a rematch newbie" I thought for a moment as I looked at Minho, he looks as me with a lot of concern as if he was ready to pull me out, "you don't need too" Minho whispers to me, I give him a reassuring look "it fine" then I turned to gally "ok want a rematch?" gally nods as a few others gather round to watch, "ready?" gally asks "yes", it was the weirdest feeling ever, I felt confidence almost as if I had fights hundreds of times, I put my arms up slightly ready to fight, gally lunges at me and I just barely dodged him, stumbling a little until I regain my footing, a few of the crowed cheered, gally clearly liked the cheering as he strikes again, I grabbed his arm and used it so I could spin over it as my legs rapped around his neck and as I spun and flipped him to the floor my legs still firmly around his neck and both my hands were holding his arm in place, the crowed went silent as they have never seen a move like that, gally who started to turn red ended up tapping out as he could no longer move or breath.
then the crowd erupted, a ton of Gladers where speaking to me and saying stuff like; how did you do that, that was amazing, you completely beat gally, that was incredible, I ignored them and went over to gally and I offered him and hand "good fight but you got lucky" gally took my hand as I pulled him up, he did not look happy but said "you not so bad for a slithead" as he walked off to some of the other builders.
the crowd defused after a few seconds apart from chuck who looked at me in awe "that was so cool, do you think you could teach me that?, can you do that again? are all girls like you?" chuck asked me loads of questions, I laughed a little at how eager he was, he is so young, I have noticed many people treat him like a little brother and I see why, "maybe one day chuck", "that was pretty badass" Alex said as he walks to me and puts his arm over my shoulder as a few runners walk up to me, "thanks" I say as Minho asks me "you ok?" as I noticed him staring at Alex's arm around me, It was nice that he cared "yeah I am fine", I started to talk to Alex, ben and Minho for a bit then I went over to talk to newt because I was feeling a little uncomfortable as Alex's arm never moved from me, after a while the party ended and everyone went to bed, luckily a remembered which hammock was mine and a lay in it, I looked at ether side of me and I noticed chuck was snoring loudly, thankfully I was so tired I managed to fall asleep quickly.
