As Olivia opened the door, she found herself face to face with her ex-mother-in-law, holding Olivia's lost wallet.
"Olivia, dear, you dropped this in the grocery store, I saw your address in it, and came to return it to you," her ex-mother-in-law said, extending the wallet towards her.
"Thank you, so much," Olivia replied, her voice tense as she accepted the wallet. "Please, come in."
Her heart raced, unsure of how to react. Memories of her tumultuous marriage to Zack flooded back, along with the suspicion that he might be lurking nearby.
"Mrs. Goldsmith, I didn't expect to see you, again today," Olivia said, trying to keep her composure.
"Mrs. Goldsmith? Call me Mom, dear. After all, we were family once," her ex-mother-in-law replied with a smile, stepping into the house.
Sensing Olivia's apprehension, her ex-mother-in-law reassured her that Zack wasn't with her.
"Zack's not here, Olivia. I promise," Mrs. Goldsmith said, noticing Olivia's nervous glances around the entryway.
Reluctantly, Olivia let her in and quickly checked on her sleeping daughter, Zivia, whom neither Zack nor her ex-mother-in-law knew existed. With relief, she found Zivia peacefully sucking her thumb.
Hurrying to the kitchen, Olivia prepared tea and biscuits, then joined her ex-mother-in-law in the living room.
"Here you go, Mom. Tea and biscuits," Olivia said, setting the tray down on the coffee table.
As they exchanged pleasantries, Olivia's ex-mother-in-law shared updates about her life post-divorce. Olivia listened politely, her mind racing with the secret she was keeping.
"It's been tough for Zack since you left, Olivia," Mrs. Goldsmith said, her voice tinged with sadness. "He's thrown himself into his work, become quite successful, but he's a changed man."
"I'm sorry to hear that," Olivia replied, her sympathy genuine yet guarded.
"Olivia, do you remember how ambitious Zack was? After you left, he became consumed by his desire for success," Mrs. Goldsmith continued, her tone solemn. "He stopped caring about anyone or anything except his business."
"His ambition turned into obsession," Mrs. Goldsmith added, her voice heavy with concern. "He cut ties with friends and family, only focusing on climbing the corporate ladder. He became ruthless, stepping on anyone who got in his way."
"He lost himself in the pursuit of wealth and power," Mrs. Goldsmith concluded, shaking her head.
Zivia's nap time neared its end, and Olivia panicked, fearing her ex-mother-in-law would discover her granddaughter.
"Mom, it's been lovely catching up, but I think it's time for you to head out," Olivia said, trying to sound casual.
Fortunately, the visit was cut short when the ex-mother-in-law received a call about her impending flight.
After exchanging numbers, Olivia watched her ex-mother-in-law depart, breathing a sigh of relief as she closed the door.
As Olivia walked back into the living room, Zivia toddled over to her, clutching a stuffed toy in her tiny hands.
"Mommy, can we play with Mr. Fluffy now?" Zivia asked, her eyes sparkling with excitement.
"Of course, sweetie," Olivia replied, scooping Zivia up into her arms. "Let's have a tea party with Mr. Fluffy."
The two of them spent the afternoon playing together, their laughter filling the house with warmth and joy.
Meanwhile, Zack's transformation into a ruthless billionaire continued unabated. Driven by his insatiable desire for power and wealth, he stopped at nothing to achieve his goals.
He cut corners, manipulated others, and crushed anyone who dared to stand in his way. His heart grew colder with each success, his soul becoming increasingly detached from humanity.
Despite his outward success, Zack's life was devoid of genuine happiness or fulfillment. He lived in a constant state of emptiness, his soul poisoned by greed and ambition.
But deep down, buried beneath layers of bitterness and resentment, a small spark of humanity still flickered within Zack. A part of him longed for the love and connection he had lost, but he pushed those feelings aside, choosing instead to drown them in the pursuit of power.
As Olivia watched Zivia play, she couldn't help but feel grateful for the simple joys in life. She vowed to protect her daughter from the darkness that had consumed her ex-husband, determined to give Zivia the love and stability she deserves.
After their playtime, Olivia sat Zivia down and said, "Sweetheart, how would you like to do something exciting today?"
Zivia's eyes widened with anticipation. "What is it, Mommy?"
"We're going to the pet shop to adopt a dog," Olivia announced, her heart swelling with excitement at the thought of bringing a furry friend into their home.
Zivia squealed with delight, clapping her hands. "A doggie? Can we, Mommy? Can we?"
Olivia chuckled at her daughter's enthusiasm. "Yes, darling, we can. Let's go pick out the perfect puppy.
