Ellie chose to have her lunch on a bench overlooking a quaint, well-cultivated garden adorned with colorful flowerpots. Though not expansive, it provided an ideal spot for relaxation, especially with a large tree nearby casting cool, refreshing shade against the relentless midday sun. The seclusion of the spot was its greatest allure, affording Ellie a peaceful retreat where she could savor her solitude.
With deliberate care, she unwrapped her neatly prepared sandwich and began to munch on it, enjoying the simple pleasure of her meal in the serene surroundings.
From her vantage point, Ellie observed her classmates engaged in various activities during the lunch break. Laughter rang out from different corners, punctuated by the energetic play of boys engaged in a game of basketball. Jeremy and his group were among them, their camaraderie evident as they enjoyed their break.
A sudden sight made Ellie nearly choke on her food—Charlie Alvarez stood not far ahead, close to where Jeremy and his female classmates congregated. His popularity among the opposite sex was unmistakable, and Ellie couldn't help but notice his refined demeanor and charm that seemed to captivate everyone around him.
Ellie rolled her eyes, her voice tinged with a hint of cynicism. "Teen love affairs are beyond pointless. High school drama is just a waste of time," she muttered, trying to deny how Jeremy had affected her too.
"Hi, umm, can I sit next to you?" A petite girl stood nervously beside Ellie, fidgeting with her hands. Ellie sighed inwardly, seeing her anxieties mirrored in the girl.
"Yeah, sure. Here..." Ellie moved slightly to the side, creating space on the bench, and the girl quickly settled down.
"I'm Mae Flores," she introduced herself tentatively.
"I'm Ellie," she replied with a smile.
"Are they your classmates?" Mae asked, nodding towards Jeremy and Charlie, engrossed in conversation with their group nearby.
Ellie nodded; skeptical as she glanced over at them.
"Looks like your class is in full swing," Mae commented, noting the lively atmosphere around them.
Ellie shrugged slightly. "Hmm, not exactly. That bunch over there is just noisy," she remarked, gesturing towards Jeremy's animated group.
Mae chuckled softly. "Well, why don't you join them?"
Ellie hesitated. "Um, I'm new here. I just transferred, so I don't have any friends yet," she admitted reluctantly.
Mae's eyes sparkled. "Really? Can we be friends then?"
Ellie paused for a moment, her cynicism pulling at her thoughts. She looked at Mae earnestly, trying to gauge if this friendship offer was genuine or just another fleeting gesture.
"Yeah, I guess so," Ellie replied cautiously. "If you don't mind my sarcastic remarks and all."
Mae laughed warmly. "Of course not! I think you're funny."
Ellie cracked a small smile, "Alright then, friends it is."
They continued chatting until the break was over, Ellie gradually warming up to Mae's presence, yet still holding onto her cautious demeanor.
As lunchtime ended, Mae bid Ellie farewell, and with a cheerful smile, she said, "I'll see you around. Bye, Ellie!"
"Bye, Mae..." Ellie responded softly.
Suddenly, Jeremy's voice boomed across the courtyard. "Hey, transfer student! Let's go! Class is about to start!"
Leave me alone! Ellie muttered under her breath, feeling irritated as she hastily disposed of her trash and rushed back towards their classroom, anxious about being late. In her hurry, she accidentally collided with Charlie, knocking her head.
