"They won't leave us alone will they?" Ferretpool growled as they reached the RiverClan border. "Their scent is all over the clearing! Isn't this like the fourth time this quarter moon?" Snowpaw shrugged. She was on a border patrol with her mentor and Whiskerfang. "It's about time they learned a lesson! Let's head back and report this." she meowed. Snowpaw nodded. With one last glance at her old territory, she bounded off after her mentor.
As they entered the camp, they were bombarded by the three new apprentices, Applepaw, Mallowpaw, and Lightpaw. Ferretpool, who was already in a bad mood, hissed at them, making her tumble over while they were play-fighting.
"I'm so sorry Ferretpool!" Lightpaw meowed as the three young apprentices broke up. Ferretpool glared at them.
"You better be! Try staying out of the way next time!" she snapped. The apprentice's mother, Lillydew overheard and glared at Ferretpool, but her mentor seemed to not notice. The three apprentices stared down at their paws, ashamed. Ferretpool dismissed them and headed straight to the leader's den. Snowpaw sat beside Whiskerfang as Ferretpool began to describe what they saw at the border. Whiskerfang even added that he had seen rabbit bones tucked away under a bush while on patrol.
"So what should we do?" Ferretpool asked. "We kept them away last time after that one battle and now they are back."
"We need to attack them again!" Whiskerfang hissed. Snowpaw stayed quiet. She knew she was not in a position to have an opinion on the upcoming events. Though if it were up to her, she would want to avoid the battle completely so she didn't have to risk getting kicked out of WindClan if some cat from her former clan spilled the truth.
"Snowpaw, Whiskerfang, you two are dismissed. Fetch Blazetuft and Midnightbloom so we may discuss this." Snowpaw nodded, but Whiskerfang frowned, clearly upset he couldn't have any further connotation. Snowpaw went over to the medicine cat den to fetch Midnightbloom. She had thought about telling the medicine cat about the Dark Forest cats, but she didn't. That dream had happened about a quarter moon ago. She entered the medicine cat den and peered in. The strong smell of herbs made her sneeze, which attracted the attention of Fernpaw.
"Do you need something?" he asked.
"I'm looking for Midnightbloom. Do you happen to know where she is?" Snowpaw asked hopefully. Fernpaw nodded.
"She went down to the elder's den," he told her.
"Thanks." she meowed and began to leave, but Fernpaw called her name. She turned and looked at him, annoyance starting to settle in.
"I never got to ask you, but when you pulled me out of the stream, how did you know how to swim? You seemed to have done it before because you were able to pull me out with hardly any effort." Fernpaw asked her. Uh oh. Snowpaw froze.
"Uhhhh... My mother taught me? She said that a good cat knows how to swim..." she trailed off, feeling disappointed in herself. Way to go Snowpaw. That sounded super believable! She stared at Fernpaw, waiting for a reaction. It felt like moons until he smiled and nodded.
"That makes sense." he agreed. Snowpaw felt immensely relieved. She ran over to the elder's den. Snowpaw stepped inside and was greeted by the elders she had talked to last time.
"Snowpaw!" the elder, Lost-sight greeted her. She smiled and greeted him. Midnightbloom was treating Daisypetal, so Snowpaw padded over.
"Midnightbloom, Grassstar needs to see you in his den," she told her. Midnightbloom looked at her and groaned.
