The post arrived early in the small office the next day, there were two letters and Yunlan opened the official one first. He couldn't believe what he was reading and sat down on the edge of his desk to read it again. Everything he had ever wanted, his own office away from here and the authority to interview new staff when needed. He passed the letter to Chu and Daqing and watched their excitement as they read it before he opened the second letter. His joy instantly vanished as he read it slowly, understanding the full meaning of the vicious words addressed solely towards him.
"You seem to be a lucky person Zhao Yunlan but luck has a habit of running out when you least expect it. The second attempt should really have worked, how did you survive the poison attack? I'll need to think of something more powerful and as always you won't know it's happening, until afterwards."
The celebration stopped when Chu and Daqing saw Yunlan's expression as he was reading the letter which was personally addressed to him at his office, not his home he noticed.
"Bad news Yunlan?" Chu asked and he was handed the letter to read.
"Daqing, what made you think of poison when we were on the roof?" Yunlan asked, as he looked towards him hoping to see the truth in his expression.
"We've seen you with a hangover several times but it looked worse and it didn't seem like the flu or a virus, and when Chu saw the pin mark, we assumed poison, maybe a dart or something similar. But I didn't push the idea because I could have been wrong." Daqing explained and hoped that he was believable.
"Yunlan, the letter said the second attempt, what was the first, did he mean the mugger with the knife?" Chu asked because none of them could think of any other close call recently.
"Possibly, and that only failed because of my hero in black, which makes me wonder if there really was a mugger, or was it a hit man playing a role."
There were questions building up in Yunlan's mind and not enough information to provide any answers, but at least they would be moving out of here as soon as possible, to their new office and be away from this atmosphere. He decided to look on the bright side by asking his two friends to start organising the files for transporting, and box everything in order to make it easier for them to remove later. He was going to collect the keys from the minister's secretary and have a good look around the new place, hopefully find out how much work would need done or if they would be lucky enough and be able to move in straight away.
The building Yunlan was on his way to look at was attached to the university but not on campus. It was next to some of the student's flats and was used as a learning simulator for different courses. Meaning that it was an empty shell of a building which could be transformed depending on the circumstances required for learning. One week it was a bank and the next it could be converted to a lawyer's office. In the past year alone, it had been a vet's practise, a clinic for the hard of hearing and a café. All the exchangeable equipment was held in the locked storage room outside at the back of the building, and there would easily be something that Yunlan could use to organise this shell into a functioning police office plus some holding cells.
