Noahs phone started vibrating loudly on the table, interrupting the siblings conversation. He quickly excused himself to take the call but his face dropped as soon as he did. "It's Mom," he said, his voice filled with worry. "Grandpa had a fall. He's in the hospital."
The news hit Kat like a punch to her gut.
"Is be okay?" She asked worried."I think so but maybe he broke something they don't know yet"
Without hesitation, Noah and Kat got up and put on their jackets.
"We don't have a car," Noah realized. "Mum has it"
"What do we do?" Kat asked desperate.
"I'll call Billie," Noah pointed out.
Not even 15 minutes later Billie's car pulled up in the driveway to pick them both up.
"Thank you Billie for picking us up, I know you had dance class" Noah thanked her.
"Yea of course, I hope your grandpa is okay," she said concerned as they started driving.
"Mee too," Kat said quietly, blinking away some tears that have formed in her eyes.
The drive to the hospital was a blur, everyone was lost in their thoughts.
At some point Billie quietly put her hand on Kats knee who was sitting on the passenger seat and squeezed it. She could feel her fear and wanted to support her.
Noah caught the exchange from the back, a flicker of confusion formed on his face. However, he didn't say anything as he had bigger things to worry about.
They finally arrived in the hospital staying in the waiting area until they could see their grandfather. Kat was too nervous to sit down and as she stood there, her shoulders tensed up with anxiety. Noticing Kat's distress, Billie acted on instinct. She closed the few steps between them and wrapped her arms around Kat
"Everything will be okay," Billie murmured into Kat's hair, her voice reassuring and soft. Kat, allowed herself to lean into the embrace, her body tensing before gradually relaxing against Billie's. "I'm scared Billie" she admitted, her voice barely above a whisper.
"I know Kat, but I'm here for you," Billie reassured her, squeezing Kats body tightly and gently brushing her hair. When she let go again Kat grabbed her hand and held onto it. Their eyes locked and for a second Kat felt something unexplainable. She was grateful to have Billie around with her during that time. Somehow it made her feel safe.
Noah observed the scene from a short distance with a mix of emotions. He was surprised at the intensity of the connection between his girlfriend and his sister- a connection he couldn't fully understand. There was also something else but he couldn't quite name it. Maybe it was jealousy, that Billie decided to comfort his sister instead of him. Maybe he wished Billie would be hugging him instead?
"Are you okay?" Billie turned to Noah.
"I guess," His voice carried a hint of uncertainty. As he continued to observe, Noah felt a slight sense of isolation
They stayed in the waiting area for a while longer, Billie never leaving Kats side, until they got called in to visit him. Luckily, their grandpa was okay, he had some bruises here and there and an injured food but that was all. Relieved the friends left the hospital again a few hours later.
Back home Noah tried to enlighten the mood since he noticed his sister was still a bit down. "How about we just chill tonight, watch something funny maybe?" Noah proposed back home.
"Yea," Billie agreed. "Laughter is the best medicine, right?"
Kat manages a small smile, "Yeah, comedy sounds good. I'll make us some popcorn."
"You get comfortable, I'll make it," Billie smiled.
Kat silently thanked her and sat down on the sofa next to Noah, who was browsing though the streaming options. A few minutes later Billie returned with a bowl of perfectly popped popcorn in her hand. She watched the siblings silently and instead of taking a seat next to Noah, as she typically would, she chose the spot right beside Kat on the couch. Kat glances at Billie, a silent question in her eyes, but Billie just smiles and nudges her gently, "Best view of the TV from here."
Kat, a bit surprised, responds with a playful roll of her eyes. "As long as you share the popcorn."
As the movie started their laughter filled the room. About halfway through the movie, Noah and Billie burst into laughter at a funny scene. Billie, still chuckling, glances at Kat and notices she was completely zoned out. Without a word, Billie gently nudges Kat with her shoulder to snap her back into reality.
"You okay?" Billie whispers to Kat.
Kat sighs, instead of responding she just leans in and rests her head on Billies shoulder.
"He's going to be okay," Billie reassures her softly as she put her arm around her and pulled her closer. Kat appreciated the gesture and subtly cuddled up into Billies arms. She couldn't help but feel safe, it made her feel like everything was going to be okay. Billie gently stroked over her hair while they continued watching the movie.
Noah caught a glimpse of them from the corner of his eye. There it was again, that weird feeling. He couldn't quite place his finger on it, but the way they looked at each other, the way they seemed to communicate without words... something was off.
He shook his head, trying to shake off the thoughts. "I'm probably just overthinking things," he muttered to himself.
--
Back in their room Noah decided to confront Billie.
"Billie, can we talk for a second?" Noah's tone was more serious than before, his usual easygoing demeanor shadowed by concern.
Billie nodded, sensing the shift. "Sure, what's up?"
"It's about today uh-"
"What about today?" Billie asked confused.
"Just uh- it feels like uh- you're, you're always there for Kat, which is great of course, but uh- it kind of felt like-uh it feels like you're, you're forgetting about me. Like earlier in the hospital for example or the other night when you just left me alone during the family dinner without any explanation."
Billie sighed, leaning back into the couch. She knew this was coming. "Noah, I didn't mean to make you feel like that. Just Kat needed me"
"I understand she needed you, but it's always about what Kat needs," Noah replied, frustration creeping into his voice. "What about what I need? You were supposed to be there, and you just... weren't."
Billie's expression hardened slightly, her patience fraying at the edges. "Noah, I'm not dating you. I don't owe you constant availability."
Noah's face showed a mix of emotions, from hurt to confusion. "I know we're not dating, Billie. I don't expect that. But I just feel left out from you two. you know? I really like you"
Billie softened again, realising her initial defensive response might have been too harsh. "I get that, Noah, and I'm sorry. I didn't mean to make you feel unimportant. I just tried to be there for her, you know, she seems very upset about all of it."
Noah nodded. "I understand, just maybe next time, a quick message or something? Just so I know what's going on."
"Okay," Billie smiled softly as she leaned in to kiss him. They started making out but something felt off. Billie's mind kept tracing back, wondering how Kat was doing. She tried to push it down but the more she tried the more she dissociated. Finally, she decided to stop fighting it and came up with an excuse to go home. However, before she left she quickly checked up on Kat again.
