Vivian POV

The second the meeting began I could barely feel my body. I stood confidently by Niko's side truly believing he would protect me. As they discussed my father, then my own fate, it seemed surreal. Rarely did any of them glance my way. How could they so candidly discuss my life and not even bother to ask my opinion?

I realized how powerful these families really were. They weren't vile humans pushing drugs and fucking whores. They were united as one to keep the children and grandchildren on top. To keep their bloodline above tyranny and above any other's rule. They were like a cult, but with more money than God. It was sickening yet alluring. So much power they held, so much good they could do.

Niko spoke of my time with him and I felt his words. I never wanted to be here or with him. There were times I found happiness behind closed door with Niko, but not within this life. It wasn't all true though. I loved Sophia, Dominick, Paul, Marie, and even Gio was growing on me again. I felt at home here, I felt safe, I felt... free, even if it was a prison.

I wanted to be by Niko's side, but I didn't know how to let go of who I was. Then I learned that who I was is nothing but a lie. I was Peter Marcusio's daughter, heir to the Chicago family. Roberto, the man that murder my child was my second cousin. His men, the same men that stood by my side were once my father's men. I did once belong here, I just never knew I did.

Paul walked into the room and I took a hard gulp. This was the moment of truth I was waiting for. I would stay in the cells for one week. If Vanessa approached me down there, I would try to get her to confess about knowing her father's true plans. If after one week nothing came of it then I would just leave. Maybe go back to my aunt's and live there peacefully with Amy.

Amy was making friends and seemed to enjoy her school. We could be happy there. I could try to find a new life, again. It was better than a prison sentence and better than death.

"I brought some clothes and dinner child." Marie spoke sadly, handing me a pair of jogging pants and a tank top through the bars.

"Thank you, Marie. I appreciate how you always tried to help me and I'm sorry I stole money from you. I just needed enough for a bus ticket." I tossed the clothes to my bed then grabbed the bowl of soup. She had the cooks make me my favorite. I smiled as I slurped up a spoonful. I will definitely miss the food here, and the desserts.

"No worries, child. I knew you needed it and was happy to help you escape. I'm sorry what came of it though. You don't deserve this fate."

"It's more than I could have hoped for Marie. I didn't know of the things my father did or even agree with these families taking matters into their own hands. I know now how Niko saved me and I will hold on to that." I gave her a small smile as I continued to eat my food.

"You must be careful Ms. V. Even though Capo gave you a light sentence it doesn't mean others won't come for you. I worry about what will happen when you leave this house. Little Amy too. Your father thought he could get away but they got him. It took ten years, but they got him." Tears began slowly falling from her eyes. Marie had been around all these years.

"I won't live in fear." I told her confidently. "And I will trust Niko this time. It's a risk but I do trust him, Marie. He will watch over us. He will protect me and my family."

"I trust he will too. Many whisper how his love for you is his undoing, but I see it as his light. Nikola will become stronger for no other reason to keep you safe. You have given him a reason to live. I watched that boy become a man and never once saw him happy or complete. You my child, complete him. I know even apart you will make him everything he was supposed to become." Marie's hand reached through the bars to graze my check.
