Ch. 65 - Time to Run

Vivian POV

Once we left that bedroom, I closed my heart. Niko made it clear I would never be anything other than his Mistress and that meant my child would be his bastard. He was getting a better life than that. All week Niko was attentive and never once raised his voice. He was trying to show me a life that could work here.

I knew the reality though. Niko was acting out of fear of me leaving, whether it be by death, running away, or him letting me go. I knew there was no reason I needed to stay here. The threat was gone. Niko kept me here for himself. We both knew he was a selfish man.

I went to work memorizing the turns and street names Mario took. In the office I watched everyone learning their routines. The accounting department took a long coffee break at 10 every day. I sparked a conversation with a young man and caught his password. It wasn't hard to memorize, 223344. Once I had all the pieces, I decided I would leave from the house. Paul took us to the south border of the property during our jogs and there was a road that was only a ten minutes' walk from there.

There was a bus station another ten minutes' walk and ran every half hour. If I timed it right, I would make that bus in twenty minutes once I left. If we ran then I could do it in ten. I hated myself for the next part but I needed just enough money to get on the bus and I planned to steal it from Marie. The staff left their belongings in the back of the kitchen and I knew Marie carried cash on her.

The buses made a stop close to my bank which I could get a new card at. From there I would rent a car and get to my aunts. The only thing I was missing was my ID which was at my campus apartment. I didn't know if the apartment was still mine, but I did have it paid for the year. That was the risky part. Niko would probably send his men there first, but I had no choice. I needed my real ID for the bank to give me a new card and I needed money to get to my aunts.

The day before my plan was to set in motion my nerves were shot. I asked Sophia to come over after her classes for a little and we all hung out together, painting our nails and braiding each other's hair. I never had a girlfriend that we did slumber parties with. I soaked up every minute I got with Sophia and was grateful she came into my life.

I laughed remembering how we clashed at first. She wanted to marry Niko and I stood in her way. Now she was in love with Dominick and I would pray they found a way to be together. Someone deserved a happy ending.

Amy was opening up a little but she was glued to my side anytime Niko's men were around. Most of them showed us both respect, but she was too traumatized from everything to forgot how they had carried on for hours about killing every Grasso.

I told her that Michael was safe with family and I swear I saw a huge weight lifted off her heart. She seemed to be able to breathe easier from the hope of seeing her brother one day.

After I got Amy settled in bed, I packed our bags for the morning. Just a change of clothes, some fruit, and I would add a water bottle in the morning. Hopefully we would only be a few hours until I had my money then we could buy what we needed.

As I laid wide awake on my bed with Amy cuddle in my arms my mind drifted to what I would never have. My hand rubbed my belly thinking what my son would look like. Would he ever know his father? If I stayed would Niko love him? I've seen him lower his walls for me. Could he do that for his own child, even if he wasn't of the bloodlines? I imagine that brute of a man softening to a daughter. A little girl that looked just like me, wrapping that beast around her little finger.

I giggled with tears threatening to escape as a soft knock came at the door. I knew it was him and my heart skipped a beat. He asked me to talk for a few minutes and I knew what he really wanted.
