Paedyn and Inej's missions weren't a complete failure, but they weren't necessarily a success either. The girls hadn't heard much, barely a whisper, about crossing the Fold.

Kaz however, had done some digging and found quite a few people to ask. And so the four crows made their way across the barrel looking for safe passage through the very thing that damned an entire country.

No matter who they asked, they received one of two answers.

Give up. Go around.

Neither were answers that Kaz liked.

Frustrated with their lack of success in the last few hours, the four sat in a booth at the Crow Club. Paedyn sat next to Inej, braiding her hair out of boredom.

After many moments of silence, to no one's surprise, Jesper broke the silence.

"Here's what I don't get," He began.

"We're going to be here all night," Inej drawled, playing with one of her knives. Paedyn smirked at her friend's comment, sparing a glance at Jesper to see his offended look.

"Rude," He commented, throwing a glare Paedyn's way, having caught her smirk. "Why haven't they tried going under? Just dig a tunnel."

"Tried that. More than a century ago. Something...," Kaz paused, "Heard them digging."

Paedyn finished tying the end of her braid, letting it stay on her shoulder. She didn't have to ask to know what Kaz was referring to. The Volcra, nasty creatures that haunted the Fold.

Jesper couldn't help but grimace at Kaz's tone. "It was made hundreds of years ago by that crazy Grisha."

"The Black Heretic," Inej corrected.

"Yeah. The one that controls shadows. They've got one in their army now, don't they?"

"The Black General," Paedyn spoke up, keeping her tone even. She knew how well Kaz was at picking up the impossible. And she hadn't protected herself with a web of lies for nothing.

"Your point, Jes?" Inej grumbled.

"If one of his kind made it, can't he just unmake it?" Jesper asked. Paedyn raised her eyebrows. Perhaps a good theory, but that wasn't how General Kirigan's powers worked.

Inej rolled her eyes. "Have you ever put out fire by adding more fire?"

"Then what's the opposite?"

"Light. The polar opposite of darkness," Paedyn began, throwing a glance towards Kaz as she finished speaking. "A Sun Summoner."

"Only a legend," Kaz muttered. "It doesn't exist."

"Doesn't exist yet." Inej interjected.

The wheels turned in Kaz's head as he gripped the head of his cane tighter. "Dreesen comes into town, doesn't waste a minute. Sends out for a crew to steal something, but doesn't specify what. Is it heavy, large, worth more than a million on the black market? Maybe even he doesn't know."

"We can let this one go, Kaz," Inej's voice grew softer.

Jesper nodded, "Sounds like a trap."

"A trap would sound easy," Kaz countered.

"A trap usually involves some sort of harm or death. Like the Fold." Paedyn added, giving Kaz a soft look. For all their sakes, she really hoped he would listen to them and forget about this job. But this was a million kruge and this was Kaz Brekker.
