"So, that went well." Jesper said from his seat at the tavern's bar.

Paedyn shuddered. "That's an overstatement. Could've gone much better."

"I thought I had twenty pounds." He shot her a playful glare. Paedyn forced herself to give him a small smile before she took a sip of her drink.

Next to them, the Conductor looked down at his hands. "The winter fete," he spoke, getting their attention, "Held at the Little Palace. There's just no way he can find a way to the Sun Summoner without Nina. Especially during this ridiculous party. The place will be crawling with Second Army."

As if Kaz knew he was being talked about, he appeared from behind them, standing next to Paedyn and Jesper. He leaned against the counter, closer to Paedyn than Jesper.

"We're in luck," he began. "There's a good chance we can crack on. Now that we're three days' travel from the capital, the next play is finding a way inside the Little Palace. It turns out the Kribirsk archives house the Little Palace blueprints. But, they're kept under lock and key. Far from the prying eyes of the masses."

Paedyn glanced up at him, noticing a hint of a smirk gracing his lips.

A fist hit the table, tearing her gaze away. A grinning Jesper shouted, "Yes!"

"What does that mean?" Arken asked, lifting his head to face his companions.

"A heist," Paedyn told him, "Our specialty."

The Conductor nodded, scooting a bit in the opposite direction of Paedyn. Still nervous, she supposed.

She turned back to Kaz, feeling his eyes on her. He didn't turn away and for the first time since she met him, Paedyn wasn't sure what he was thinking. His eyes weren't angry, happy, or emotionless.

As Inej joined them, Kaz began going over the plan. While she listened carefully, Paedyn couldn't shake the feeling that Kaz Brekker knew something she tried so hard to hide.

Paedyn couldn't help the smile that adorned her face when she saw Kaz's attire for their portion of the heist.

"Color looks good on you, Kaz." She smiled, although she herself was wearing her usual suit for heists, made from black and brown fabrics.

"Black is a color, Raven," he reminded her with a small glare.

"If you say so." She grinned, moving to walk in the shadows the buildings above casted.

"Stay out of sight," Kaz told her before he walked into the building. Doing what he instructed her to do, Paedyn slipped in behind him, hiding behind a large vase while Kaz walked up to the desk.

The man behind the counter looked dreary and annoyed. Paedyn waited till Kaz got closer to the man before she moved again. She made it to the bottom of the nearby staircase when she heard Kaz's voice.

"Good day to you, sir." His tone was sweet and cheery. Paedyn put a hand over the cloth that covered her mouth, stifling a laugh as she quickly scaled the stairs.

Keeping her hood low, so no one would recognize her face if spotted, Paedyn waited in the shadows for the man behind the counter. It didn't take long, Kaz must've been quite convincing.
