intro

Few people ever crossed the Fold and lived to tell the tale. Paedyn Anders was one of those few people. She had traveled alone, on foot, through the darkness. All the way till she saw daylight again in West Ravka.

With every step she took, she could hear her older sister screaming at her to run.

Paedyn always listened to her sister. Her sister was her true north, her guiding star. With no guidance and no saint to look over her, Paedyn wandered through the towns and villages. She didn't know when to stop. She just knew that she had to run.

And so, she ran. All the way to a ship and all the way to the back of it.

When the ship docked at Kerch, something inside Paedyn told her that this was it. Her sister talked about the island of Kerch like it was a saving grace. Upon stepping foot in Ketterdam, Paedyn wasn't sure she believed her sister. But who else would she believe in?

Around every corner there was a new horror. Days went by, then weeks, and months, and years.

She taught herself to fight, to protect herself and only herself. That was before Paedyn ran into yet another horror, this one in the form of a person.

Tante Heleen.

Places like the Menagerie were not places for Paedyn. She imagined her sister telling her that. She imagined her telling her a lot of things. That's what coaxed her to fall asleep every night. She imagined her sister kneeling next to her bed, stroking Paedyn's hair, whispering advice in her ear softly to lull her to sleep.

Maybe that's what drew Paedyn to seek comfort from Inej. The Suli girl had braided Paedyn's hair whilst she cried in bed after her first night at Menagerie. Inej Ghafa wasn't Paedyn's older sister, in fact the Suli girl was the same age as the runaway. But as Inej looked up to her saints, Paedyn looked up to the Wraith.
